Default Loud click when shifting out of 1st & 3rd...

...sometimes. I can't tell if its the clutch linkage or the shifter linkage. Sounds exactly like a small pebble hitting sheet metal. But happens only coming out of 1st & 3rd.

Any ideas?

Probably the same sound that's coming from the muffler. It's normal. It's actually a pop.

Default Backfire is the likely cause

The pop you are hearing (I get it too), is unburnt fuel igniting in your exaust system. It no big deal and can be looked at as a Scooby trait. I believe the root of this "problem" is the design of the stock header (Someone correct me if I am wrong) combined with the additional scooby trait of running a wee bit rich.
From what I hear, it is even more apparent with an aftermarket catback system.

Get outta town!

It sounds entirely metalic. I guess it could be as I've heard the subbies with aftermarket exhausts burble and pop. Interesting.

I dunno bout any of that, but when my RS is not warmed up very well, the trans is very shakey. No smooth shifts from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd. No problem when warm, and this didn't happen last year. Is this just cause the trans is cold? This didn't happen in my Probe (only past stick) Any comments/ideas. Just hope this isn't a serious prob.....getting near warranty end.. thanx

My Forester made the same noise... never figured out what it was, but it stopped making the noise at around 8K miles.

I second the ignition in the exhaust. I just bought a Borla cat back a couple days ago and it does the same thing. I even drive a 4EAT.

It doesn't matter if it's cold or hot, it only does it occasionally. I'll try to get the car up on ramps today and look for any place linkage could contact sheet metal, since that's what it sounds like. If I can't find anything I'll ask the dealer to look into it and probably accept the 'backfire' theory.
