Default HELP with air pocket.

Ok. this thing is reallly starting to piss me off (the car).

1998 Legacy GT. Hot air will come on then leave and the Temp guage will shoot up. I drained the coolant and re-filled it. drove it around and it worked perfectly.....right up until I pulled into my driveway. the hot air shut off and the guage shot up again!!! what am I doing wrong to get the air out of the system.

this is what I am doing.

Drain the fluid out of lower Hose.
Then take off Thermostat -let drain completly
then Put back on and put hose back on. fill both sides of hoses. I opened up the small Screw on the Pasenger side of the Radiator to let air out. filled it up on both sides slowly.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!!! Im going to drink some beer and hopfully that will fix one of my problems.

I will be on AIM for most of the night and until forever.
AIM - massdrewski.

or if you really wana help, my cell 774-994-7027 (its verizon)

Drew,

(please pardon my anger with this problem. I have tried to fix the problem at least 3 other times with the same result....Nothing

Have you ruled out HG failure? Any white smoke? Get the coolant tested for exhaust gases at a reputable shop.

I checked and No headgasket problems. Im not sure I am filling it properly to get all of the air out. I actualy have it jacked in the air from the front to help with the Air getting out.

It sure sounds like you have a bad head gasket. EJ25's don't smoke or have any coolant in the oil when the gasket goes. They just pressurize the cooling system and overheat. When they pressurize the cooling system you lose the heat.

Where did you get the t-stat? Does it have a jiggle pin?

This sounds exactly like what happened to me in october.
These were my symptoms, see if any of them happend to you.Heat would work but then suddenly blow cold, temp guage would raise when load was put on the motor(the temp guage would rarely go up if i stayed below 3000 rpm), and upper rad hose was ice cold even though the car was "over heating".I had taken my car thought a HPDS and over heated my car but ruled out a HG falure because i didn't see any of the signs. I went through 2 t-stats thinking that was the problem,it wasn't. Then I took it to the dealer thinking that i was doing something wrong when i did the coolent changes so i had them do it.Thats when they broke the news to me that my HG had an internal leak and needed to be replaced before any more damage was done. How exactly did you test for a HG failure?

I'm bringing the car into a local Subaru Tech at his house to get checked out. When we swapped the Heads we put on new gaskets and hoped for the best. Iv only driven it about 10 miles total since the swap. the top Rad- hose does heat up and the lower one is nice and cold. The smoke that comes out isn't white. I have a feeling that I just didn't fill up the coolant properly and there was a air pocket still inside. I'm going to check it again today and well...hope for the best. this is a great car and would be perfect for an ej20 swap. hopefully someone wants to buy it for that project. my main goal is to get it in running condition and able to be inspect able. Ill post the conclusions from the tech later on this week. Im just hoping that it isnt a head gasket

ok. figured out what was wrong. After sitting over LAST winter (07-08) The radiator got jammed up. I swapped the radiator and now she hiccups like a champ with no overheating. Now I need to find out why the CEL is still on for the miss-fires.
