Default Need help with clutch issues

Hey ya'll. I have an 03 stage 4 wrx with an after-market clutch (Spec 2) with about 30xxx miles. I was out the other night on a stretch of road with no traffic and thought I'd practice launching. Took about 3 runs and on 2 of them I smelled burning clutch (I always try to slip the clutch but occasionally hold it too long). Anyway, I drove home and parked the car and in the morning had these symptoms:

1) I can shift into gears with the motor off and clutch in
2) If I start the car in neutral, it won't go into any gear and grinds when I try reverse
3) If I shut the car off, put it in gear, and start with the clutch engaged, it lunges forward as if the clutch is not engaged.
4) After the car warms up, the clutch/flywheel seem to break loose and it drives and shifts fine
5) After the first time this happened there was noticeable increase in shudder (real bad) but after the second time it happened the shudder was minimal.

So, I don't know but sounds like the clutch is going, right? Does it sound indicative of any other kind of problem or ruined tranny parts?

Thanks for helping me solve this.

In case anyone is interested, here are some things I've found out regarding this issue:

Either the throw out bearing is broken, the fork is broken, or the springs on the pressure plate are broken... or some weird combination of things that mysteriously fixes itself when the parts warm up. That part is the really odd part ;-). I guess it's all this or maybe the clutch disk actually fused itself to the flywheel. That could explain it. Then when it warms up it unsticks from the flywheel. Dunno..... but it does sound like a clutch problem and not a transmission problem if you can put it into gears with the engine off and if it shifts okay once it has warmed up and started working.

I currently cannot get my car in gear due to the same symptons your describing since its taken me 4 month to get to this point i assume it may be a throw out bearing that gave away on me but i really dont know.

Spec is on vacation tomorrow so theres no way to get them to help out before i find a complete replacement clutch.

Good luck with problem solving your issue. Mine is weird because on two occasions it went into gear after warming up. One time I warmed it by letting it idle while the other time I 'broke' it free by turning on the ignition after putting in gear with the engine off. I'm in process of getting a new clutch and flywheel so I'll see what the issue is when that gets installed

I'm updating this Just incase someone else has ran into these problems. Seeing as how you didnt update it.

I've done 3 clutches this week, Exedy, clutch masters, and a Spec stage 2.

The throw out bearing that came with the spec clutch is trash, I go everyhting buttoned up. Went to actuate the clutch to make sure it was moving free and propper.

The Tabs on the throw out bearing where the shift fork locks in. Broke off. Both of them.

and I ran into the same problem with a spec clutch in a 96 mustang GT. 3-4 days after the clutch was installed the throwout bearing failed. and I have 50+ clutches to base those 2 on. They were installed 100% correct.

The clutch its self seems to grab good ad work very well. Just get yourself a new OEM Throwout bearing.

same thing happened to me when installed my act clutch and flywheel i was told the flywheel was to thick i was told the clutch is in back ward i was tolf my slave was broken i was told to move my pedal i was told might need a master cylinder or braided lines blah blah blah... turns out my clutch was fused or heated to my flywheel. i had not even drove it yet and it fused. To fix i had to start it in gear tappin the brake all the way down the driveway because the clutch was not disengaging at all Then i shut her down put it into first started it up and slowly took of then i tried to put it into second nothing couldn't go back to first either i shut it down put it back in first started it back up and gave her hell Hehe! My neighbor said i blew a couple flames out the exauhst (pdx tune?) but the point is when i gave it a little it broke loose and shifted right into second. after that it broke in just fine ive got 4xx miles on it now it seemed to be shiftin a little tough due to some valvoline 75w90 gear oil too,not as good as subie fluid GL whatever becuase i can tell on 4th gear, grinds but thats next on my long list of fix's hehe...... but if you slipped it real good i could see it fusing like mine when it cooled I did let my car run for like 30 min before i tried to get it into gear so maybe it heated a little
