Default Toying with an idea

I was think about the possiblity of putting a svx 3.3 H6 in my 97 lgt...i was wondering if there would be any clearance issues? obviously the old wiring harness would have to go...is the 4AET compatible with the H6 from that year? Thanks

The SVX 3.3 Liter H6 is known for being a high torque motor. To date no 4EAT Automatic has been strong enough for this motor. A very popular swap for SVX owners who are sick and tired of swapping out 4EATS is to drop in a WRX or WRX Sti transmission and rear differential, thus permanently eliminating the problem prone 4EAT from the SVX. Yes if you could mange to shoe-horn a 3.3 H6 into your Legacy you could keep the 4EAT, but nobody would recommend it.

Those who have looked into such a swap have generally concluded that it isn't an especially feasible swap to do (because of clearance issues, not to mention weight distribution as well).

stock transmissions can handle up to about 300HP, then u will need to change out the torque converter.

Seriously? So how come there are SVX's running around with stock transmissions then?

Because the owners of these magnificent beasts have has to replace the transmission when the OEM 4EAT dies and the simplest repair is to find another 4EAT to replace it ?

This is highly dependent on how you drive the thing as well...same reason why some people can daily drive 300hp+ swapped RS's mated to the stock N/A manual transmission and others blow up theirs even at stock N/A power.

That said, if someone can shoehorn the 3.3l into a GC RS, then yes, it can be done on the Legacy. However, the swap is much harder than say an ej20t swap or similar turbo'ed H4 engine.

Supercharge it, and drop it in with a 6MT from an STi.

Seriously, don't keep the 4EAT. You'll have to add a mondo huge oil cooler to it, minimum if you do that swap.

Nobody is pointing out that you'd need to seriously reconfigure the front end (the radiator) just to fit the engine in the bay. It's 6" longer towards the front than an EJ engine.

The 4EAT can handle quite a bit of power, but it's just not as fun with all that power I wouldn't recommend a WRX tranny for the SVX engine either, though. At least a LGT tranny if not an STi 6MT. Maybe PPG gears?
