Post 5th Gear Popping Out Problem

Well, I took my car back to Exeter, and even though they couldn't replicate the problem, they started dismantling my tranny anyway (thank you Scott!!!). At any rate, upon draining the gear oil, a whole bunch of metal shavings came with it. Out comes the tranny, and they split the case open. Result: 5th gear and relevant synchro worn down hardcore. So, a new 5th gear is on the way along with the synchro, and I get a rental car... somehow, it's worse than the Sunbrick I had after the accident. It's maroon, has a big engine, AND CAN CARRY A PLATOON OF MARINES!!! I got a Dodge Caravan! In the timeless words of Charlie Brown... ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!! Oh my, I fear for my life when I drive this front wheel drive grocery getting piece of American engineering... but at least I have something to drive, right? Anyway, if your car pops out of 5th, get it taken care of right away folks.... Thanks to Exeter for taking care of it right instead of half assing it back together and sending me home! This episode has been brought to you by the letter Q and the number eleventy billion.

Well, if it's done tomorrow, I'll have my brother or father pick it up (I HATE letting other people drive the car, but it's for a good cause). I will definitely have it back before the meet if I have to fix it myself!

Just to note here - Realize that if the dealer can't re-produce the problem. They don't want to take it all apart. Because if there is no problem found, they just ate 4+ hours of labor.

Warranty repair is a tough business sometimes. They get money from SOA, not the customer when it's warranty work. If you think it's tough to get money from customers - try getting paid 2 hours for something that really takes 3 from a big corporation that really doesn't want to pay anything for warranty work!

So the next time any of you have a problem, and can't reproduce it... Don't get mad when the dealer says they can't make it do the same thing. Just take your machine to a reputable dealer, and see if they can. It might take a couple of trips. But this is how it's done. In the end - it'll all work out.

Ask PaulG about "reproducing a noise".

Speaking of popping... Anybody have the definitive scoop on the popping during upshifts and deceleration?? I've heard on it mine, m750s, and my wife's Forester. Basically any 5-speed 2.5L engine.

I've had gear pop out problems in 1st and 2nd..only going down certain hills with my foot off the gas and letting the gear slow me down...I called the Subaru dealership, and the service rep told me this was normal the the unibody of the car shifts on surfaces and such..should I have my tranny fluid pulled and checked for shavings?

I have the SAME exact problem-brought it in immediately after noticing (about 2 weeks after buying the car used from the dealer) and they couldn't reproduce the problem. It happened constantly pulling out of the Quincy Adams Red Line parking garage. I stopped taking that a while ago and hadn't see it til I was in bumper to bumper traffic on 128 and it popped out of second. I'm not thrilled with this but don't have the patience to keep going back until they can repro it...
