Question Car Stereo

So, what is everyone using for tunes in their car? Factory or custom? Primarily I am interested in what people have to say about speakers, but I would be interested to see how people construct their entire system.

This is what I have:

Alpine MDM-7741 MiniDisc Player
Alpine CHM-S620 6 Disc Changer
2 x 12" Philips Sounds Labs Woofers
JBL BP150.1 Power Amplifier

....and the factory speakers.

The factory speakers are OK, but not great. It doesn't need to get very loud before the music starts to break up. I would like to get new speakers, so I am looking for people's opinions. I am not interested in competition grade stuff, just good quality.

Check this thing out! About $2000 at Today's.....

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pi...,21417,00.html

Mucho expensivo!

When I said Alpine, I actully meant Kraco, and when I said JBL, I meant Sparkomatic.

Does anyone know the brand/model of the factory speakers? I assume the same ones are in all the Imprezas. The premium package doesn't change the speakers, just adds stuff, right?

Oh. And another thing. Today's had Sony MiniDisc decks on clearance sale for $150. Apparently they have too many of the old ones, and the news ones are coming in soon. I must say, they have twice the number of decks on display as they did the last time I went in.

I guess I am now, how do you say, "post-whoring", aren't I I have responded to myself twice before anyone else......I will stop now.

Heres my 2 cents. Unless you have a Mazda MP3, all stock systems suck! I could buy a better system at Walmart. I will be running an all Alpine system in my WRX. Courtesy of leftover stuff from my Honda. The only thing I need is a way too expensive Alpine headunit. I usually do my stereo shopping on base. They have Pioneers, Kenwood, JVC, and Infinity speakers. The stereo shop off base usually try to match those prices by just telling them you seen the same stuff on base for cheaper.

Mike, I see this is gonna be a long post for everyone. At least you upgraded your speakers. What kind did you get?

Sir Wally - I suggest you upgrade the speakers. OK means sucks if you are talking about stock speakers. MBquartz are damn good but expensive. I think you should stick with brands you like and the price.

I was looking at the DEI 6 1/2 3025 Model. I can get the 5 1/4 3055 Models for $200 + $1 for Dynamat kit at www.sounddomain.com -- they want over $400 for the 6 1/2 at Today's. Both will fit! The others I was looking at were some Diamond speakers from Shimeks. The Alpine components unfortunately will not fit -- they are too deep. That is the problem with the Imprezas. I definitely want components. No coax for me! If I have tweeters mounts, I am going to use them.

As a side note, those DEI speakers (Directed Electronics) have a magnet made from neodymuim, which makes them SUPER compact. I looked at them -- they look weird! But apparently sound great!

I love my sub, but it is too darn big. I cannot use the bin in the back of my car, so I am going to look for a smaller box. I shouldn't have a problem getting the same kind of base with newer speakers. Has anyone actually heard of Philips Sound Labs? I can't find any info on the web at all. My mum got them for me for christmas 5 years ago.

KapaFool: How much do you save on base? I am curious. I was told that you could get MiniDisc's much cheaper on base than in the stores. I wish I knew someone in China -- they are DIRT cheap there!

You dont really save much on base I don't think but some car components are cheaper as in Infinity speakers. The Diamond Audio speakers kick ass and DEI is pretty damn good. I have Alpine DDDrives and they have neodynium magnets. Looks weird because the speakers are big and the magnet sticking out the back is tiny. Call Kris about the minidiscs because he priced them at the base 2 days ago.

Simon,
They had the MiniDiscs on base for like $16.00 for a pack of 8. Is that a good deal?

Let me know and we can work something out with Eric.

It's a tad cheaper than out here. I forget what they go for at Pyramid. I'll check this afternoon (they actually had the best price, BION.) Freddy's has 8 packs for $19 (or $31, depending on which one you go to ) I will let you know. I think that I could save a few bucks from the base. I'll let you know.

Muchas Gracias!!

You fooled me with the upgraded speakers. Stock = sucks. I think everyone with WRX has upgraded speakers then.

Alpine Type-S. I think thats what they are. They are pretty good for affordability as an entry level Alpine sub. I think the Type-R is the upper one.

Subs do not have to go in the trunk, but due to space restrictions that is where they usually end up.

You can put them any where you want...space, money, and skill permitting!

10, 12, 15 inch subs? Type-S in a box. You should check how much a brand new one costs first. If its 15 or 12 inch yeah maybe.

What kind of box are they in? Are they in a truck box? Is it a custom made box, or a manufactured one? If they are brand new speakers and the box is good, then $300.00 is OK. I am assuming though, since I do not know what Alpines go for, but I know that they are not cheap. Right Eric??

I don't know if that's a good price. I did a quick google search and found the 12" Type S subs for $99 each at the first site I visited.

Anyway, I have a Jensen MP3 player in my car and Polk speakers. It's pretty sweet, I've got about 125 songs on one CD with 192kbs quality songs. I don't know if I'd recomend the Jensen though. I've gone through quite a bit with it. The first one I bought wouldn't accept CD's for some reason. Sent it in and got a new one under warranty. That one came back, worked perfect then some punks tried to steal it. Dumbasses tried to pry it out with a screw driver when they could have used it to remove two screws and pop it right out. They didn't get it out, and that did some damage to it. Sent it in to get fixed(not under warranty of course because of theft damage), and when it came back it stops playing MP3's after it warms up for a half hour or so. So this is where I am now. The place I had fix it is having me send it back in to fix the warm up problem. So I've gone through quite a bit with this head unit. When it did work good I was very happy with it, and I've found Jensen costomer service to be pretty good.

At most places if you have a custom sub box built, it would cost around 300 bucks. But that is for a good quality box that has been glued and them screwed together (in predrilled holes) with the appropriate internal volume. You can also get a box filled with polyfill to to help bass response somewhat. I personally can't really tell the difference, but I do it anyways!

Cool

I pity da fools who think they can get a better price! Yes I know they are cheap but someone went out of their way to build a box for it. I suppose you can order the subs but you have to pay shipping for it anyways. Da same price you can get at Shimeks or Safe n Sound. Just watch for the 2 for 1 sales.
