Default What is the best radar/laser detector for 2008?

I'm looking in to getting a new detector. I did research but it seems a lot of reviews are outdated and there are constantly new products on the market. I narrowed down my search to 4 best IMO possible candidates.

1. Valentine One
2. Beltronics STi driver (the irony)
3. Passport 9500i
4. Cobra XRS-9950

i like the V1. Forget about the #4 cobra.

You do not need to buy a STI driver unless you are in a state where radar detectors are illegal. It is basically a Bel RX65 that has radar shielding on it so a cop can't use a radar detector detector on you.

After that, the V1, RX65 and the 8500/9500 are all pretty awesome but I like the V1 because it has the directional indicators

I love my v1, but I rarely get to put it to use. Issue with "laser detection" is there is no detecting it. If you've got some kind of grasp of physics, you'd know you cant really detect laser because there are no waves. Once your laser detector goes off on the v1, either you or somebody next to you got hit with it by a point and shoot gun. Only real security is not to speed. The cops around my way all use laser guns. My v1 is useless to me unless I'm going on longer road trips etc.

They use everything. Troopers use both laser and radar. I don't see a lot of suffolk county speed traps but when I have they were radar.

I live in queens and do a lot of driving on the queens and nassau county sections of the LIE and gcp/northern state. Don't go into suffolk much. However, from my experience...in queens the HWY 3 guys pretty much always use laser guns. No saving you from that. Nassau uses laser and radar fairly interchangeably. Best bet is just not to speed.

Physics 101, laser is a light and light is a wave.

But I know what you saying, there isn't much scatter with laser so it's very difficult to detect. However Instant ons can be tough too.

So valentine one, that's what I was thinking initially. I was bit put off by radartest.com review in 06 - where they basically said it hasn't changed since 2002 and it's outdated - maybe the review is outdated b/c I know Mike updates the unit on frequent basis.

+1 for the Passport. Hands down best radar detector I've owned. It's five years old and I have NEVER had a ticket with it. To me Valentine's arrows are just a gimmick. I mean really, if the warning goes off, you need to slow down anyway....doesn't matter where it's coming from.

v1 is pretty much well worth it, you KNOW it will work, it is hardwired so no using your cigarette socket or batteries, and if you ship it back to them they will update it for you instead of buying a newer more modern unit
but a lot of city cops don't use laser, since it is illegal in some towns
apparently laser messes with certain machines and if every cop in town was firing them all day long, then it would mess with something

no idea myself, heard it from the guy i was trying to buy one from, but he said until i plan on doing highway driving or bigger cities, don't bother quite yet
so when a salesman tells me not to buy something i usually believe them

the following series of events is of an anonymous friend of mine:
0230 in the morning on some interstate in WV. doing +140mph trying to get to a certain location to see his grandfather on his death bed. long cresting left hand turn and *ting* *ting* *ting* his radar detector goes off like a geiger counter and is increasing rapidly, but not faster than his brembos can slow him to a gentle 70 mph in a matter of 2 seconds (plus or minus .5sec).
thank god he was wearing his seatbelt. and he was equipped with his RX65

but seriously, if your gonna be dumb, your still gonna get caught. but if your doing 75 in a 65 or so, i know for certain that with that rx65's 2 mile LOS range, you should be fine.
if it works in WV mountains, i know it will work in the new your jungle.

just my 2 pence

fyi - my RX65 is hardwired also ($13)

I have the 9500i. It is brilliant. With the integrated GPS, I have eliminated false alarms in my home town. When my detector goes off, it is one of two things:

1. Cop
2. Car with Jammer

All of your choices are decent but they only detect. I have a RMR C435 and it's awesome. Even though it was extremely dumb and risky, I speed past a few cops just to see if it works. It detects and jams just as advertised. I've had it for almost a year and it's still working good and they will pay a speeding ticket if you happen to get one.

From Car and Driver 2002:

Link --> The Great Detector Test - Feature

Quote:
Overall Score: 97 - Valentine One
Overall Score: 73 - Escort Passport 8500
Overall Score: 61 - Bel 980
Overall Score: 43 - Cobra XR-1050
Overall Score: 35 - Whistler 1780
Overall Score: 34 - Uniden LRD 987
Note that the GPS feature in the 9500i makes it MUCH more valuable to me, as I tend to "tune out" the detector's signals when I have many false alarms.

In CNY the troopers use both, Syracuse cops tend to use radar, and camillus cops tend to use laser. I got a laser jammer to go along with my radar detector and it's saved me once or twice.

I wsa a hardcore ESCORT supporter, and loved my 8500. It was no less effective than the V1 (I proved this on several group drives). However, after the 3rd 8500 started malfunctioning and died (google them, all the passports and beltronics are plagued by "self calibration" and "needs svc" bricking), I picked up a V1. Let me tell you, I love this thing, its a tank, you cant break it if you try. And its obviously very effective, and now that I have had it a year or so, I have to admit, it IS better than the 8500 was. Not by a huge margin, but its better. Far less falses, and seems to pick up cops a little earlier.

The ci is the permenantly installed bumper mounted unit? I had a Passport SR1 (previous generation) on my WRX, and I HATED it. You really need to have the detector unit high mounted on the windshield to get effective readings.

To the 8500i guy who had malfunctions: me too. I had one go down after multiple drops off the windshield. Now I have the my 9500i hardwired, and loop the cord around the rear view mirror a few times. That way if the suction cups fail, the unit will dangle from the cord instead of crash onto the dash.
