Default The grounding mod

Well, I did the single point grounding mod tonight. #4 AWG cable from the negative terminal to:
- passenger side intake header
- driver side intake header
- passenger side strut top
- firewall behind intercooler
- driver side sidewall by fender

It FEELS like it runs smoother now. I can't say for sure whether it's an actual improvement or whether it's my mind playing tricks. Oh well. Project is complete. Car is certainly no worse off than before

Where did you end up picking up your wire and connectors? Don't you live in the Clear Lake area? I work in the area and would appreciate any leads

I got the wire and ring terminals at EPO on Hercules/Medical Center and highway 3. #4 awg wire is $0.95/ft there - cheaper than most car stereo stores. EPO also has lots of miscellaneous connectors, split loom, zip ties, heat shrink tubing, etc.

To attach the ring terminals to the battery I used one of those quick disconnect battery hookup things with a wheel that you can screw by hand. It has 2 pieces that sandwich together. I sandwiched the ring terminals under the screw knob and stuck a washer on top of them.

That is where I was planning on going. We bought a few computers from there as well as some network cards for work. I think I know what you are talking about regarding the wheel thing. Did you pick it up at a autoparts(ie napa, autozone) store?
Thanks again.

I got the quick disconnect knob thing at Sears. It was labelled as a "Marine Quick Disconnect Battery Terminal" or something like that. The intended purpose is so you can disconnect your battery w/o tools. The big knob in on top just happened to be an ideal place to clamp a bunch of ring terminals.

Head south on Hwy 6 to Sugar Land. I'll be doing this soon, and installing a PITA boost gauge. (don't ask!) I'm right off 6 and Hwy 90.

more like 8-9 miles. if you take 6 the whole way down it will take 20+ min. due to traffic and lights.

If you have Wash. plates, why are the tools in Portland? Isn't that in OR? Only other Portland I know is in Maine!

Oh yeah, you may want to stop by Mobile 1 Autosound on the way down to pick up the 8 gauge wire and connectors. I'll post later in the week about time & location this weekend. I have a couple things going on, but we can schedule a few easy mods during the day.

Default Parts Express...

Parts Express has eight gauge wire and power distribution blocks cheap. If anyone here in Houston wants to do this mod, we could even double/triple/whatever up on an order to save on shipping if you don't mind waiting a few days for it to arrive.

Here's a link to a 4 gauge ring terminal pack there, too:

$2.85 for a 4 pack.

That's great, but to get it here by Saturday means you'll pay a bunch to have it shipped. I'm sure we can find what we need locally. It's not likew were looking for 1/8" compression fittings and tubing for goodness sake!

It's not so bad. I did the mod partially in the parking lot and partially on the front step of my apartment, at night even!

The hardest part was cutting the 4 gauge cable and crimping ring terminals onto the ends. Without a bench vise, I just layed the ring terminals on the pavement and whacked them with a hammer to crimp them. Measuring how long to make each cable was not hard. Bolting the cables up was fairly trivial.

Agreed. If a bunch of people want to get together and ground their cars for a shop day project, let's just go to Home Depot or EPO for the stuff.

EPO has the best prices on #4 and #8 wire, although their prices on ring terminals were a little steep ($0.95 each for 4 gauge ones).

I called up EPO earlier and they're selling 8 AWG for 50&#162 /ft, ring terminals for about 50 &#162 to $1 depending on size and distribution blocks for $27 or $28 depending on which purchased.

Even if no one purchased distribution blocks (where the biggest savings are), it would still be about half price or less through Parts Express if a couple of people participate.

I have a Lowe's and a Home Depot close by. They may not have good quality stuff rings though. There's plenty of car audio ships that will have good stuff.

If you bring beer, I WILL have it at my house! A couple cases might do the job!

hopefully no one will mention how much beer i drink!

Now that we've heard from people who AREN'T interested in combining an order from Parts Express to do the grounding mod for extra cheap, is there anyone who IS interested in this? I posted some links and prices earlier in the thread.

From my earlier post in this thread:
"Parts Express has eight gauge wire and power distribution blocks cheap. If anyone here in Houston wants to do this mod, we could even double/triple/whatever up on an order to save on shipping if you don't mind waiting a few days for it to arrive."
