Default Mercedes-Benz unveils new four-cylinder diesel lineup

Mercedes-Benz unveils new four-cylinder diesel lineup

Mercedes-Benz announced a new range of four-cylinder diesel engines today, reiterating their focus on reducing engine size while maintaining performance. The new lineup delivers better economy and power levels than Mercedes’ previous generation of four-cylinder diesel engines, with the most powerful variant delivering 20% more power and torque than the outgoing powerplant.

The range topper is a new 204hp 2.1L unit with a peak torque of 500Nm – as much twist-force as a petrol V8. Despite the increase in power and torque, the new four-cylinder diesel burns substantially less fuel than its predecessor and as a consequence CO2 emissions are reduced by as much as 13% and are now in line with future EU5 emissions standard.

The extra performance comes from several tweaks to the injection and common-rail system, now in its fourth generation, as well as an increase in fuel pressure, higher turbo boost from new twin-stage turbochargers, more efficient intercoolers and exhaust recirculation and improved fuel and water pumps.

The new engine lineup will initially be offered in the C-Class sedan. It will come in three guises: 250CDI with 204hp, 220 CDI with 170hp and the 200CDI with 136hp. There are also plans to put the engine into SUV’s, as well as install it in hybrids and possibly combine it with Mercedes’ BLUETEC technology. The top of the line 250CDI will accelerate from 0-60mph in about 7.7 seconds and still return fuel economy of 46mpg.

a 2.1 liter diesel with just over 200hp? That is impressive. I am not holding my breath that it will show up stateside in bluetech any time soon, though.

370 lb/ft of torque from a 2.1L - now that is big news.
And I wouldn't doubt about seeing that engine here in the US, after all I believe Europe's diesel emission rules are going to get more strict in the not to distant future, so M-B wouldn't have designed a whole new engine without accounting for these regulations.

How about this, Rudolf?

Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, turns 150 this year. Or, at least he would if he hadn't died 95 years ago. To celebrate (his 150th, not the death) Mercedes has announced a new four-cylinder diesel engine set to arrive this summer.

And it sounds like a doozy. It'll first appear in the C-Class as the C250 CDI, but it's actually a 2.1-litre, twin-turbocharged unit with common-rail injection.

With 201bhp and 369lb ft of torque, it's 20 per cent more powerful than the outgoing C220 CDI... and 25 per cent less thirsty - Merc says it'll return 52.3mpg in the C-Class.
All of which makes it sound like a serious competitor for the awesome engine in BMW's 123d, which produces almost exactly the same horsepower but only 295lb of torque.
That unit will haul the 1-Series to 62mph in seven seconds flat: 0.7 seconds quicker than the C250 CDI, but the latter is a bigger car.

Merc also plans to introduce two detuned versions of the 2.1-litre diesel engine later in the year, but you don't need to concern yourself with those.
The C250 CDI will go on sale in the UK in October. Here's hoping it'll make Rudolf proud.
