Default will a 2.5 legacy automatic tranny fit to a 1991 2.2L automatic?

will a pre 1999 2.5L legacy automatic tranny fit to a car that had 1991 2.2L automatic?

my stepdad is trying to fix his daughter's legacy, and the (pre 1999) tranny he bought. so far he has notices a difference in the speedometer sensor thread size/pitch, and that the older tranny had a mechanical cable, and then the newer tranny uses an electronic sensor.

does anybody have experience with swapping transmissions in these old legacy's, and does anybody have insight on if this is a lost cause or if it might work?

thanks,
Chris

Wouldn't the 2.5 be from a GT so it would have a 4.44, and the 2.2 would be a 3.90? Will the 91 TCU even work with the new transmission?

GT or Outback and yes both are 4.44 so no and the TCU would prolly need some resistor or something.

interesting. I will be sure to mention this to him.

I don't know the details, but I am under the impression that a previous owner changed out (what I am guessing to be be) the rear diff and that has contributed to the transmissions failure. although I am not sure what the current configuration is.

Is there a correct way to install a 2.5 (probably gt/outback etc since it's a 2.5...) transmission on a 2.2 legacy, or is it more trouble than it's worth.

at this point i think he has it physically together again, but that seems to be no guarantee that it is configured properly.

thanks for you input!
