Default My book is alive... what is it???

Alright so I'm in the library writing a paper and I look down at my book and there is this little red insect crawling around. The little bastard is tiny, smaller than a period and is bright red. I have a banana sitting next to my book could it come from there??? For scientific purposes I squished him to make sure he was living and not just a imaginative object. So if anyone can figure out wtf that thing that would be awesome in helping me not finish my work

Probably a cedar mite. They tend to come out of nowhere this time of year and be all over the place. They're harmless, though, so no need to squash them. Plus they leave orange stains behind if you do.

Pretty sure they eat wood and leaves. They probably arrive with the new batch of bark mulch that everyone puts down around this time of year. They may just hatch out of eggs in the spring, though.
