Audi returns to US Rallying!

At a specially arranged press conference today Herr Joest announced a temporary return for Audi to the US rally scene. Not having competed here since the late 80's with John (J.B.) Buffum, Audi has obtained the services of long time Audi World Championship rally driver Walter Rorhl. Rorhl is being reunited with his 1987 Pikes Peak-winning Audi running in the SCCA's Open class.

Joest said the company was angry about all the current car ads claiming "rally" background. Herr Joest of Audi's R8 Lemans fame is directing the effort to reclaim Audi's past US rally crown. Based in Atlanta, Georgia it's a no-brainer for his outfit to attend the Cherokee Trails International Rally only a 100 miles away. With a perfectly good "monster" Audi Quattro sitting gathering dust in the corner of the shop and Walter coming over for testing on the American Lemans Audi R8s the timing was good. The Pikes Peak car is rumored to be running over 900 hp and features a massive wing to create the downforce needed to keep it hooked up. With a compressed air bottle keeping the turbos spooled up the altitude of the Appalachian mountains won't be a problem. Walter said he's inspired by Audi's new advertising campaign of "Never follow" and doesn't plan to follow anyone at the rally.

At today's press announcement a representative of Subaru's Prodrive says he welcomes the chance to show their stuff. On the other hand Mitsubishi is claiming foul saying they want a level playing field. It appears that the stage is set for a real knockdown drag-out fight this season.

Very cool... just wish they were running something a little more modern than a 1987 car. Is the Open class excluded from the new rules about the maximum age of a particular car's bodystyle?

Anyway, here's hoping we see some coverage on Speedvision

Wow audi wants to reclaim there so called rally crown so they are using a car from 1987? Guess that says alot about there current cars eh? Well we'll see. Hope they have lots of those old parts laying around for that antique car. How is the playing field not level? Who cares how much hp the car has. It all depends on how much of that you can put to the ground and not sit there spinning in the dirt....Personally I think its a joke. Audi knows that can't even come close to being competitive with the new cars they have so they need to dust off an old relic.

Are you high ?? This cars was light years ahead of its time, It very well could still be one of the fast cars in the world on the right road...

Yes, I'm afraid it's a joke. For the record, that car with Rohrl at the wheel would decimate any Subaru or Mitsubishi right up to a WRC version on a U.S. rally. Hell, probably even with me at the wheel.

Perhaps this is an uneducated question, but why don't they use the S3?

Yeah, they've already got a car, but you'd think Audi would want to showcase it's newer technology.

I don't think the Haldex tranny is legal for Prorally. I could be wrong, though.

But the real reason is that Audi is too successful in LeMans to care about rally. Those R8's were just about untouchable.
