Default O2 sensor replacement

So, I picked up a used O2 sensor from a guy on here - I think it was a from a forester or something because the plug didn't fit. So, I spliced it into the old plug and the cell went away...for about 10-20 miles, then came back. I thought one of the wires on my splice job came loose...redid them, then the CEL came back a short while after driving. Any ideas? Should I just throw in the towel and buy a new O2 sensor?

O2 sensors are one of the few things I refuse to buy second-hand. Also, I won't buy them from anywhere other than the dealer. I've had too many problems with aftermarket "universal" O2 sensors. I've been a mechanic for almost 7 years now, and every time I have to replace O2 sensors, and the customer cheaps-out and won't spend the money on a dealer sensor, they always wind up coming back with the same problem that they brought their car to me to fix in the first place.

The second time around, I insist that they use a dealer O2 sensor, and the problem goes away. I made the mistake once of buying a "universal" O2 sensor. It worked for almost 15 minutes before it died on me. I bought a dealer sensor later that day and installed it. It's been working fine for the past 55k miles.

I'm about to the point of buying a dealer sensor. I cheaped out and bought what I assumed would work, since I did a search for a pre-cat sensor on my 02 WRX. I found one that said universal and it looked identical to the Denso OEM sensor I took out. After splicing it I then had a CEL. So I went to the same place autopartswarehouse.com and ordered a plug and play denso that said it fits my 02 wrx. After taking it out of the package I noticed the wires were too short and the plug was female instead of male. Now maybe I mistakenly ordered a post-cat Denso (haven't checked yet, if so I'll just install it post cat). But I spliced this sensor into the factory plug and I'm still getting a CEL. Went to AutoZone to have the code read and they said it couldn't get one so maybe I just had to reset the ECU. After unhooking the battery, leaving the doors open and pumping the brakes the CEL was still there.
I'm going to double check I ordered the right sensor, but if there's anything I'm not doing to clear the ECU let me know.

When replacing the front (bank1, sensor1) O2 sensor, do you recommend replacing the secondary O2 sensor (bank1, sensor2) also at the same time?
