Default 08 trailer wiring

Don't flame, me I searched.
I got no response in the Impreza section.
Just ordered a hitch.
Where can I get a trailer wiring harness kit for an 08?
I'm a little afraid of wiring it myself due to the LEDs
Thanks in advance

Where did you get the hitch from?

I don't believe the 08's are wired for a hitch because it is not recommended you tow with them.

I'm hoping to "adapt" my wiring kit from an '07 for use on my new '08 5 door... Has anyone looked into doing this ?

I've wired my 2008 2.5i to tow. I used etrailer.com to purchase the hitch kit and wiring stuff. Basically all you need is a light controller (http://www.etrailer.com/p-119146.htm) that taps into the lighting in the trunk with 'vampire clamps', then it has a long wire with the connector needed to attach to the trailer. This can be run through a rubber grommet under the spare.

The hitch install is a pain in the ass, and requires enlarging slots in the frame with a grinder. It also requires removal of both mufflers. You need to use these bolt threader things to insert the bolts through the sealed frame.

Get a 12 pack and be sure to have an afternoon free. On a positive note, the towing is super doable with the small car. I tow my 16 foot boat with the 2.5i all over the place.

I just thought I would add to this that in the instructions provided with my hitch from drawtite, it said simply to take the mufflers loose from the hangers... if anyone is going to do this just start with removing them completely. It will really save you some cursing... I would say that it took me around two and a half hours to install the hitch, the time would have been cut by a half hour or so if I hadn't been a dolt, and had started by removing my mufflers. I was just chicken about messing with them and it was really unfounded. They came right off and went right back on. Time would have also been shorter with a grinder to work with instead of having to use a drill to make the holes larger..

I do really like the way the hitch goes on in the end though! Very happy with the results.

Default 08 5-door trailer wiring question

It was a beautiful afternoon here on Saturday and I needed every bit of it to get the hitch onto my 08 5-door. Mostly my own goof, because I bumped one of the bolts back up into the frame rail and spent l-o-o-o-n-g time fishing it (and the rectangular backing plate) back out of the forward hole.
Aside from that and the challenge of getting the muffler re-hung, it went fairly well.

Sunday afternoon, I decided to tackle the wiring harness. etrailer has a T-in kit for the sedan. I assume that means unplug one connector, plug in the T, plug in the unplugged harness, and you're good to go. The offering for the 5-door is hard-wired, meaning find the harness and Scotch-Lok the trailer harness to the car's harness. Only one problem...where did they hide the harness? My Forester (01) and Legacy wagon (98) have the harnesses out on plain sight in the spare tire well and little access panels in the corners and tailgate to get at the lights.

Can anyone help me out here and tell me what piece of trim I need to remove to find the treasure?

Thanks,
Dave

Default bump for unanswered question

Does anyone have any information as to the location of the taillight wiring harness in an '08 2.5i 5-door?

TIA,

another bump.... I know you can find the wires at the taillights themselves but I'd like to find a better spot preferably inside to mount my box.

When I needed a wiring setup for my ITR I went to Uhaul and they had it, I was shocked!
It's been working great, and made well. Check them out to see if they have one for your car.

I bought a Happy or was it Hoppy wire harness at pepboys for like $20. It uses a relay's and connects to the light wire harness. I think I have a spare I can sell.

The kit I mentioned is universal. Jumper the wires off the tail lights. Uses a relay so not to use the power off the lights for a towing kit.
