Default Good Deal on A helmet?

Does anyone know of a good place to purchase a helmet for Autocross. What rating does it need to have and how much could someone expect to pay for a full face?
I'd rather not rent one if I can avoid/afford it.

Thanks in advance!
David

For the next several years the helmet rating will be at least M90 SA90. M=motorcycle SA=automobile.
All clubs that run SCCA, track days, rallycross, Hillclimbs all require at least the 90 rating. The helmet can either meet the M or SA ratings.

If you visit a motorcycle shop most likely you can find one for under $100 for a M90. www.racerwholesale.com has lots of choices for under $100 for open face models.
If you want to buy a helmet that will last for at least 5 years rules/rating wise get a M95 or SA95 and you will be good to go for years.
I got my M90 from Racer Wholesale for $79.

You can spend allot more $$$ on a real nice helmet but if all your doing is rallycross, SCCA autocross and the chances of you banging your head on concrete is nill, begin with a less expensive model. For an extra couple bucks you can be a real Sube' poser with some decals slapped on your helmet. Makes it look allot more expensive too!

It really sucks having to borrow someones elses sweaty helmet (I don't lend mine out BTW because of that) and also trying to get a loner before your run is a hassle so a nice inexpensive helmet is a must.

Its my friday!!!!!

So something like this would work out great for RallyX?

Default one thing to think about

please keep in mind the difference between motorcycle (M-rating) and automobile (SA-rating) helmets. helmets with the M cert are designed to work most efficiently with a single impact accident, as one would expect when you fail to keep the rubber side down.

SA helmets are for the inside of a rigid car structure where is it a bit more likely to have more than one impact. for things like auto-x and track days it's really unlikely for any incident incompatible with life to occur. however, it's good to keep in mind as anything could happen.

i gathered that Snell M is good enough for autox... but Snell SA is minimum for track days... correct me please

M is like 100 buks
SA is like 270

big difference.. then again.. why skimp when youre talkin about your gray matter

Default like you said...

hozay-

m is "good enough" but...it's a personal choice. i wouldn't sweat it too much. a helmet is better than none at all, right?

also...
occasionally you may want to check the www.specialstage.com classifieds....

many rallyists are cheaply getting rid of older helmets... and purchasing new onew...

just a thought!

Can anyone suggest a good retail location in the Puget Sound area? It's always nice to try on the helmet before buying.

still working on the stickers......

If you plan on going to track days in the future you may want an SA helmet. Most of the events I've been to won't allow M helmets.

Back from the dead...I guess that calls for an update.

I ended up buying a full-face KBC, rated at M95, at CycleGear in Tacoma. They had a pretty decent selection and were very helpful in picking out a helmet that would fit my fat head. IIRC I spent just a little over $100. I went with a full-face so I could also use it for karting, but if I was buying a helmet just for autox and track days I'd definately get an open-face. I really like the Bell Mag series.

I bought a Shoei RF1000 that has M2000 rating for doing AutoXs but then ended up getting a motorcycle My plan is I'm gonna use the RF1000 for autoX, get a SA2k rated helmet for the Silver State and get another helmet for my motorcycle.

If you have a little time you can watch eBay

I bought my G-Force there and I'm happy with it.

Everything from open face to full race & blank white to graphics pops up for sale.

I used the G-Force sizing chart to figure out which size helmet to buy and it worked for me.

Yeah Speedware up in Redmond has a pretty good selection. I found that Arai's are the most comfortable and lightest but carried the heaviest price tag.

Yeah I paid almost $700 after tax for my GP-5K (Full-face). But I'm very happy with the comfort.

yup, SA is min. for trackdays.

when i bought my helmet, i decided getting a SA2000 - so that I could use it on both autox, rallyx, or track days, without having to worry about the requirements.

got a white Pyrotect (uses Bell components) SA2000 full face, and also have a black open face G-Force SA2000. and a black/silver HJC M2000 for kicks

but the M-rated (M2000) should be fine if for autox use only - plus you get lots of nice color selection just make sure not to drop 'em!
