Default Engine knocked REALLY bad after sitting for 4 days

Okay, so I have put in 10W40 penn oil in my car. I noticed my gas milage go from ~20 to ~15. Also, I left town for 4 days and when I started my car after it sitting for the 4 days, it knocked as if I had a bearing completely disintegrate. After about 5 seconds it mellow out and went away. I assume it just needed a good oiling to calm down, but I was a little freaked out cause I just rebuild my motor after spinning a bearing.

Outside temp was ~45 degrees F.

Would this thicker oil really drain from all the joints in just 4 days?
Should I be concerned with how bad it knocked, and assume damage was done?
Any thoughts that I have not thought of?

Thanks!

I've had that happen to me before in a '91 Subie. It's an oil starvation problem. First thing I'd try if it was me is waiting to see whether it ever happens again. Next thing I'd try is a new oil filter and maybe changing to a thinner oil. There's a few reasons why it may have happened. If it happens again, definitely change oil and filter and use a thinner oil. Try 5W30 where you live.

....or possibly slap from the timing belt due to the tensioner. I had it happen to me as well. Everything has been fine since then and after reading around (and the fact that I have another symptom indicative of the tensioner), I'm assuming it just happened to get stuck for a few moments.

mine did it once

then again

there is a hydraulic piston on the tensioner which goes bad
sometimes quickly
sometimes slowly

Mine has done it on a few occasions. But, only when it sits for a week or so. I would definitely like to know what this is. It doesn't sound good.

are you using an aftermarket oil filter, possibly one without a anti drain back valve. why are you running 10w40.
