Default exhaust smokes only after idling for a few minutes and no other times. causes?

I've been basically stage II for a long time. Increased boost, tune, bolt ons. Recently, my car began smoking only after sitting and idling for more than a couple minutes. During/After normal driving, there's no smoke. During/after driving hard, no smoke. Only if I let the car sit and idle for a few minutes will any smoke be visible. Does this symptom point to any particular problem, or could it be a number of things? Thanks for the info...

Turbo's can leak fluid with no boost idling and not leak while driving.
I assume you mean after the car has warmed up and it's not valve stem seals puffing right after a cold start? Cracked engine valves can sometimes do this.

Use a mechanics hand held vacuum gauge to help diagnose problems. The boost/vac gauge in cars are usually damped vac side and are of no help.

yes it's after the car has warmed up...
What will the vacuum gauge tell me?
Thanks.

what color smoke are you getting? if its black then thats an oil issue, which could point to turbo/valve maybe even piston ring issues. if its blueish white then that is coolant and the idle control valve on subarus are known to melt their gaskets, allowing a small amount of coolant to leak into the intake manifold. This would be my guess as you see the smoke while at idle only, meaning when the valve is operating. just my guess tho.

it's a really light color smoke. Whatever it is, it's just a slight bit of it. Just enough to allow me not to pass smog...
Isn't coolant flowing through the throttle anyway, if the car is at idle or not?
I thought that if the idle control valve was leaky, that the car would smoke always...
It is worth looking at for sure. Thanks.

My car is doing the same thing and I'm also at stage II with bolt on mods but like you it runs fine and the smoke goes away when I drive. but lately it seems that the smoke is there more often. any suggestions? Did you find out anything about yours??

Just to clarify: Black smoke is fuel, not oil. Bluish to bluish-white smoke is oil, not coolant. White but _not_ bluish is coolant. The rest of the diagnosis I have no comment on.

It's the hot side turbo seal.. I just went through the same situation(smokes when idling for a few minutes, then nothing while under boost or driving). I bought a used tdo4 from private for-sale forum and the car hasn't smoked since.. Also, my car started doing this after I went stage 2...

so for stock block with no other symptoms, it could very well be turbo seals on their way out?

Did anybody ever get to the bottom of this? I took my car in to have it looked at and they told me that it was normal This was about a month ago. The car seems to be doing it more and more lately I guess if I have to I'll drive it till it blows then take it in and tell them I told you so but I don't wanna do that I'd rather fix it and hopefully soon.

I have a stage II with a VF39 that does this and it's been more frequent as of late. At first it would only smoke a little occasionally while sitting at idle for 5-10min. Now it does it at every other red light when I sit for a minute or two and it's considerably more smoke (blue-ish white, definitely oil). I assumed (hoped) that it was turbo seals because my wallet would rather get the turbo rebuilt then replace some piston rings. =)
