Unhappy smoked by an Audi S4

I was driving along with traffic on I95 tonight going bout 70 when I noticed this car approaching behind me. We were both in the leftmost lane. He pulls over to the side to pass me. What did I do you ask? Well of course, I sped up. I dropped in to 4th and buzzed ahead. He followed closely. At this point, I had no idea what this car was (it was night time). I shifted to 5th at about 100. The other car had to get back behind me to avoid traffic int the other lane. He kept up pretty well so I'm starting to wonder what this thing is. We're going at about 120 and then it happend. There was an opening in the lane to the right of us and off he went. I was suprised at how quick he passed me. The accelaration in this car was unbelievable.. and we were already going at 120+ when he surged ahead! Amazing... then I realized it was an Audi S4 so I didn't feel as bad .. This was the first time raced anyone in my new WRX and it felt pretty good. The power in this car is good.. but in the end, it just wasn't enough

Oh jeez...I'm getting sick of defending i-clubbers on Audiworld. Choose your races wisely people. I'd bet my chipped/exhausted A4 1.8T could pull on the WRX over 100mph. These cars excel at freeway speeds...that's what they're built for. I don't plan on getting too cocky with my future WRX until I've played with all my Audi friends to see where I stand.

BTW, the S4 is a twin turbo V6...same turbo as the 1.8T(K03). Chipit and you've got 307hp. Not to be messed with.

it's worse than that.. it's a 6cyl twin turbo (bi turbo). and yeah. they are highway machines.

I had a guy in a brandnew red S4 play with me once.. I was just excited to see first hand what it could do.. I was floored by the results. The driver of the audi was cool.. he was having as much fun as I was.

I didn't exactly choose to play with this guy. In fact, I had no idea what car it was until he passed me. And yes, I am fully aware of what the S4 is capable of. I still had fun nonetheless.

How fast can you go in 4th until you redline? The 5th gear just doesn't seem to have much pull. I guess I should also note that I'm relatively a newbie with driving manual. THe WRX is my first 5spd. Perhaps that had something to do with me getting blown by. oh well.

speaking of Audi's... I had a 1.8T race me from a stop light in Nashua the other night. The funny thing was, I wasn't racing, and I still pulled ahead of him. The only way I know he was racing was from the chirping of the fronts into 2nd gear. it was pretty funny, though. Next time I guess I'll try, so I can embarrass him in front of his girl.

Fourth in the wrx is more like 133.
Stay in third till around 96.

Just keep on the gas until the tach swings near readline, then shift fast.

5th is just for fuel saving.
If you get out of fourth in a race, your going way too fast.

wow, those WRX gear ratios sound pretty tall. Maybe I should pick up a WRX transmission and put it in my RS now that it's turbocharged. I could use a nice tall 5th gear for cruising all right.

edit: oh wait. your redline is higher. so it's not quite as tall as I thought. but it still sounds taller than my Legacy twin-turbo gearset.

Nothing wrong with being beaten by a higher power.... and yes, it's almost always fun. Especially with other Impreza owners!!

true the S4 is a nice car, pretty fast too but it all comes down to the fact that it costs so damn much. A $40k+ sports car should be able to pull on any car that is half its price. Obviously this isn't always true(thankfully) and that's what makes import tuning so much damn fun. Can't wait to start seeing the potential of the USDM WRX.

Pat Olsen has a video of me smokin an S4 at VIR. I wish I could post it. Edwin has seen it.

I spent two days on the track with modified A4s, S4s, S6s, M3s, and various other fast german cars. I really didn't have any problem keeping up with any of them. After almost every session an S4 owner would come up to me and ask, "what the hell is in that thing!". I found it very funny.

Cheers,

MattC

Yes, the WRX does seem a bit hindered by tall gearing. In my A4, I was redlining 4th gear at the end of the backstraight at the Glen at 110mph. 133 in 4th in the WRX seems like gearing for an automatic. But the Quattro needs short gears to get that heavy car moving...3350lbs. S4 is around 3650 w/ 6 gears.

I was at the Rim of the World Rally volunteer picnic yesterday, and one of the "real" rally drivers took me for a spin in his street S4 Avant.

Spin, not literally, but I thought we were going to die! Cliff on one side, rock wall on the other. He took us (me & Noelle) up this steep hill and the car vaulted forward with ease! He said it had a chip, put out 300hp & 370lb.ft.!!!!!

The front wheels went airborne twice on the way up this mountain road, and once on the way down. The brakes ... freakin anchors! The car ran over wet pavement repeatedly without shimmying, or slipping. It was scary! I don't remember the last time I was SCARED.
