Default Is the factory Nav worth getting?

I know there's many upsides to Garmin, etc. But I do like the clean factory look.
as always,
TIA.
Daddy.

I really don't understand the point of nav unless you are constantly traveling where you don't know the roads or if you have Alzheimers and can't remember how to get home each day. $2K extra for the factory nav is a waste of money IMO. I've got an AVIC D2 because I like the way the larger screen of the double din looks, but I've never once used the nav feature.

it's a sweet setup, but 2k? ehh
i'd just get an el cheapo $149.99 gps unit
you'll probably never need anything more than that
and that frees up over $1,000 to do what you want, and if the time ever comes where you want a different cd player, you can swap it without losing your 2 grand nav system
and less crap to break

1st post:

i just purchased an 08 5-door.

I was waffling on the premium package v. the navi and the 2k price.

The navi package it was, for several reasons:
1) I was going to spend four to five hundred dollars on sirius upgrade anyways, done through the dealer or purchasing a standalone unit and installing that (which i did in my prior car).
2) the clean install. looks better, plus sirius is wired in through the dash already.
3) as i purchased a new car, i plan on having this for a while. i would probably regret not getting the navi package over the next 5+ years.
4) i got the package slightly less than 2k, as i got the car at invoice minus 1500, so breaking that down over 24 payments made it even more lucrative

I would say generally avoid upgrading to factory navs...

Why not do it:
-approx $2,000 is expensive for most people
-buying an Aftermarket nav can serve the same purpose at oftentimes 1/4 the cost (or better), so more money for other aftermarket mods, or factory upgrades
-Factory navs aren't portable, if you have more than one car, this can be important
-Oftentimes people don't use them as much as they think they think they would

Why do it:
-Cleaner look
-If lets say, 2000 isn't a lot of money to you, then of course that plays a role
-As mentioned before, the $2000 is really just $xx dollars a month or so
-Also mentioned before, if you are going to have the car for a longer period of time, and travel a lot, then its definitely going to be more practical and get more use...

Get a garmin nuvi or similar. Then you can take it with you in other cars, or on foot, or loan it to a friend/spouse/family member/whatever.

I got the wife a nuvi and she loves it. I take it with me when I travel for business.

Definitely get an aftermarket one. If you just want the nice built-in look, get a double din Pioneer or Alpine screen with GPS for 1k - 1500. Much better imo.

Love my Garmin Streetpilot c550. Couldn't live without it . I got it for sale for $350 a few months ago (retail was around $500 IIRC). Works great + it has a bunch of features:
Find locations by name
Associate locations/addresses with your own names
Bluetooth connectivity so you can do handsfree with your phone
MSDN updates (weather, traffic ) - requires a subscription (I don't really use this, but they give you a free 1 year subscription with your purchase)

The only bad thing about it is that it has fallen off my windshield a few times because it's a tad big. I'm also kind of wary about leaving it on the windshield while I'm away from the car because an sti + a fancy nav isn't the most unobtrusive things for thieves :P.

also, factory nav systems these days are quite restrictive, like requiring the vehicle to be put in "P" or stopped before you can input any information...yes it's safer this way...but can also be seen as a PITA.

the new line of AFM systems are very nice and clean looking.

I agree with the previous posts that Nav is NOT worth it unless you travel ALOT>.
I have traveled aprox 40K miles a year for the last 5 years and have been fine no NAV. I di recently get a garmin though and it was worth it for me to find hotels and food.

GARMIN FTW!,...

But NAV only if you travel or just have extra money to spend
