Question Anyone here actually install Koni inserts?

If anyone has I would appreciate some pointers or any info on any modifications needed to make them fit.

I have read several posts where people have alluded to having to modify them to get them to work. If anyone has actually done it I would appreciate some install tips.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Just waiting on the UPS man!

If you try a search here, a member on the board has them (I can't remember his name). I just PM'ed him the other day, but have not heard back.

What part numbers did you order? I can't seem to find a part number for the rear struts because they have fitment problems.

Also, did you order for a sedan or a wagon?

Post Part Numbers

Here is what I have for part #'s

8610-1351- front
8610-1352 rear

The rear is listed by Koni as a special order part.

But the vendor I used (eshocks.com) says Koni USA is now beginning to stock them.

I am not sure about the fitment problems. I would like to know what I am getting myself into.

I have a sedan BTW.

Default Koni

The rear Koni struts should be available in April. I ordered a set for my WRX Sedan and I specifically requested no inserts. The fronts are fine, you'll just have to wait a month or so for the rears.

This is the member on the board (who has posted about the install) : trhoppe

If you do a search under "Koni" for the past year in the Suspension Forum, his post should come up.

bbaerotek:
Thanks for the part numbers. Are your struts both inserts front and rear, or just the rears?

Scoobie Doogie (Dave):
You kind of confused me. Are your front struts not an insert, but a complete strut, and your waiting for the rear complete strut to come out the end of April (where did you hear that)?

The reason I asked:
If I do decide to go with Koni's (which I thought were all inserts), I would buy a 2nd set of WRX Struts/Springs (Used) to hack up.

Thanks guys. Sorry if this has been covered. I have only been researching it for the past few days, and haven't had much time to read.

Paul,

The front struts are the same for the WRX and the RS. The rears were the inserts that you have to cut-up. They were designed for the RS and not the WRX. Koni is manyfacturing struts for the WRX now. The fronts are available now and the rears will be available in April. Info source is John at Stranoparts. www.stranoparts.com Of course now you have me second guessing myself and therefore I am calling them on Monday.

OK, now I'm confused...

Been following (pretty much) the Koni insert discussion for a while but if you cross reference the part number listed for an '02 WRX by Stranoparts (8610 - 1351/52) on the Koni web site, you find that number listed only for:

"1994 - 2000 - Impreza 2.0GT Turbo Sedan/Wagon (Plus) 4WD for original KYB struts only "

Am I missing something? It's very possible I am (wouldn't be the first time), I didn't think these two applications were the same. Anybody know for sure?

Here is what I find on the Koni-na site:

SUBARU Impreza 2.5 RS AWD, 94-99
Front: 8610-1351 Sport
Rear: 8610-1352 Sport
Special McPherson strut insert bolted into OE housing after cutting top and removing old internal parts. For OE KYB only

So, these part numbers are not for our '02 WRX cars. They fit though, with some modification. If they were for our cars, they would be listed as a '01 Impreza application (since that's when our WRX was available everywhere else), or a '02 model since our car is an '02 car. If the application says '00 or less, it is for the older body style (I think).

I think people have installed the RS inserts in WRX strut housings.

So, you have one option:
1. Order WRX specific front Koni inserts for the WRX and rear RS inserts and make them fit.

I am going to wait it out I think, and see what happens.

thanks Paul, seems right to me... you hit pretty much all the options I'm looking at, and with the same conclusion... I'm waiting too.

Check out a user, trhoppe, he has them on his WRX and has ran at the ProSolo in Florida. He got his for $600/set.

Stranoparts is still listing the Koni 8610-1351 (front) and 8610-1352 (reaer) for the WRX. Those are both inserts. Where are the mysterious front full-struts (not inserts) available? Tirerack? The inserts from Strano are $150 each, the fronts (no model # specified) from the Rack are $210. Perhaps the housing accounts for the difference.

Oh, yes, I'll call on Monday, but if someone has an answer before then, I'd appreciate it

I am not sure either. If you call and find out, let us know.

If I have time, I'm going to try and call also.

I think the Koni sport struts are inserts at that price.

I spoke with Luke at Tirerack today:

Confirmed:
The front WRX Koni's they sell are inserts
He has no info on when the rears will be available.

As far as he know, Koni only makes inserts for the WRX, not a complete strut housing.

So, I have edited my post of options above to reflect this info.

Default Koni info

The Koni's are inserts only.

1. the fronts are available now and fit just fine

2. the rears will be available in April and will just drop in with none of the cutting that you needed to do to get the RS inserts to fit.

3. www.stranoparts.com is where you can get them at a fair price. I am paying about 150 each give or take a couple dollars.
