Rally Stuff * ITN Road Rally - !!! The Midnight Run !!! - 06.21.08 *

into the night rallye team proudly presents

THE MIDNIGHT RUN

A 10 hour, all night Monte Carlo style Road Rally

June 21 - 22, 2008

ALL LEGAL VEHICLES WELCOME. ALL PAVED ROADS. NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT REQUIRED.

Everybody likes to drive the back roads. You know, those beautiful two-lanes sweeping through miles and miles of open country? What if somebody put together the best roads they could find into a kind of giant board game with your car for a game piece and the landscape for a board? This is not a race. However, opportunities for spirited driving will abound. All timing is set at or below posted speed limits.

Paved roads only. 2 people per car (driver and navigator) are strongly suggested. Event runs rain or shine. There are 4 classes: Beginner, Novice, Regular, and Expert. We suggest you bring a clipboard, pen, paper, 3 different colored highlight markers, and a good digital clock that allows you to set the seconds. (A stopwatch is not the best choice.) Binoculars, calculator, and hiking compass, if available, are also helpful.

The entry fee for this event is $60 for Expert Class, $40 for Regular Class, $20 for Novice and Beginner Class. Entry for Novice and Beginner Class is FREE if either driver or navigator is a first time entrant. All entries must bring vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and driver's license to Start. Instructions and maps for this event will NOT be posted online prior to the event, but will be handed out by car number beginning at 7 PM on June 21. For more details on this rally, or rallying in general, browse our website at www.itnrally.org.

START LOCATION: Flying J Travel Plaza, 42810 Frazier Mtn Park Rd., Frazier Park, CA 93243

DIRECTIONS: Take I-5 to the Frazier Mtn. Park Rd exit (just north of Tejon Summit near Gorman at the top of the Grapevine). Go west to the first STOP sign and turn left. Take the first driveway to the right and enter the Flying J parking lot. Look for us near The Cookery entrance. Hotel nearest start is the Best Rest. 661 248 2700, or go to bestrestinns.com. Rates about $70 plus tax.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Saturday, June 21, 2008

Registration opens: 6:00 pm

Instructions out: 7:00 pm plus car number

Novice Orientation: 7:30 – 8:30 pm

First Car Out: 10:01 pm

First Car to Finish: 8:00 am (approx.) on Sunday, June 22.

no, one or the other. (or both if you are a course worker)

the 31st is a pre-check event, where workers and volunteers meet to pre-run the course and discuss the rally.

patience, dont get mad if you get lost...its just part of the adventure.
since this is an all nighter type of rally...bring lots of drinks/stuff that will keep you up, snacks wouldnt hurt either considering most food places are not open 24hrs.

something something...bring this stuff
marvin *insert stuff to bring here*

Here's a list of things that I have when I do this.
  • Flashlight
  • highlighters and pens
  • clip board
  • snacks: redvines, beef jerky and powerbars (I like the ZONE ones)
  • cooler with soda and water
  • two different wieght jackets, never know what the weather will bring.
  • charged cell phone or two yes there will be a number to call just in case.
  • work gloves just in case you have to change a flat
  • A working spare tire or fix a flat.
  • lipbalm and sunscreen
  • compass (just in case/but you don't need one for the novice/beginner class)
  • sunglasses
  • gas cards and money
  • Headache medicine and Dramamine !!! for you and your co-pilot if so needed.
  • A Watch or two or three
  • a ruler
  • calculator
  • a sense of adventure
  • a willingness to drive, a lot! on some of SoCals best roads
  • Driver's License for the Driver and Navigator, Proof of BOTH Insurance and Registration.
  • if anyone participating is less than 18yo you will need to follow the instructions on this page

the ones in bold I consider essential.

It's important to bring a watch where you can set the seconds manually. Please don't use a stopwatch, those are useless. Also, ifyou have never done anything like this before, please come to the orientation class on time and ask lots of questions. We will be there to answer them all and to make sure you have a great time at this.

RR

Some would consider this one of the tougher events. They are my favorites. The roads are free of traffic since everyone is already asleep. The starting point is probably one of our best ones since it already close to all the great roads. First timers shouldn't be scared, we have had plenty of people start their road rally lives with this one and survive, some even do well.

bring a couple of light source, don't rely on the dome light. With this rally it is really important to stay on course, its easy to get lost in the pitch black of night. Stop at all the opportunities we give you to get fuel, you never know when the next one might be.

Feel free to ask questions now, we are more than willing to help you out.

oh yeah...get gas whenever you see a station and you're a bit under the half tank mark.
you might see stations and be like "we'll fill up on the next one", but then you'll realize..."holy ish, they're closed" so dont do that. if you see a station thats looks open...fill up.

if they provide the maps b4 the event.
print the maps and instructions, if you are new please get there early to attend the beginner run thru. everything will be explained there.

the rally course is really not a course...its on regular streets, freeways, back roads, dirt roads(if chosen to go that way or your navi tells you to turn into it)
the times are based on driving within the speed limit(sometimes it feels like joe or whoever ran the times was um...not looking at the speed limit and was having fun)
just try to follow the speed limit and if you dont, please please please drive within your limits and with lots of caution.

so if your question is, can the cops/chp pull me over and ticket me? the answer is a hell yes.

oh and for those that are new...a gps will def help out, specially at night.

We have a lot of people that make the trek from San Diego. We have also run a few events down there in the past, but with all the traffic from the casinos and new homes being built, may of the best rally roads are no longer useful

come to the rally early and start asking questions

Registration opens: 6:00 pm

Instructions out: 7:00 pm plus car number

Novice Orientation: 7:30 – 8:30 pm

First Car Out: 10:01 pm
as you can see there is a lot of time between when registration opens and the start of the rally. Get there early, get some dinner in you and start milling around, once the instructions are out, read them. Then get over to the orientation and pay attention.

here is a link to the general instructions, this will go through the terminology. Please read, if you have questions please feel free to ask them here. We will help you the best we can.

General Instructions: http://carzero.freeservers.com/general.pdf

for those of you that have rallied before, now is a good time to catch to any rules changes that may have occurred.

I post this in a lot of other places as well. There are a great many Subarus that come, but one look at the results from other rallies, you will see that people are coming from all over.

since these events are run on public open roads, we must share them with everyone else. We plan the rally to be at legal speeds. If you are asked by the local police what is going on, tell them it is a road rally / scavenger hunt. Road rallies are perfectly legal according to our states highway laws.

some events have the routes release ahead of time, this one looks to be one of the events where the routes are released at the start of the rally.

it is pre-check. If you can't make it in June, or plan on helping out as a course worker, then you come on 5/31. Otherwise, no there isn't a pre-run for the competitors in June.
