Default Getting around emissions

Hey, I asked Winslow and Eric at the last meet how people with JDM swaps get past emissions. By doing the seasonal registration, do they still run them in the winter? I'm assuming they do, so does the APD ever try to catch people for that sort of stuff? Thanks

Thumbs up

are you going swap in a SR20DET? my friend swapped his engine in his integra and when he had to get emissions the people told him that as long as the engine is of the same brand as the old engine, as in swapping a nissan motor with another nissan motor the car should pass the inspection. just make sure everything looks stock and you have the paper work for the new engine.

No, I've pretty much decided I'm going to get a Subaru(old style though, looks better IMO). I'm just trying to plan out what I want to do to it now. No, I don't think I'll be doing a JDM swap in it, but whatever I decide will most likely not pass emissions.

I have been wondering how people with turbo kits and aftermarket ECU get pass emission! Most states do not allow programable ecu and you can make two different programs. A smog one, and at HP car of death one...

dunno

Default Emmisions

Emmisions is real tricky here, bottom line anything withot a CARB #the IM tech can fail and reject you, then you get put on a refferal list if you piss them off. Then you have to go visit the referee when you get ready to re-test again. I had to pretty much demod my car all the way down to stock to pass, sucked real bad, only to pass and put everything back on the next. My advice get a beater, I got a 2nd vehicle so mine will be seasonal starting in April of 2003. I think seasonal limits are april1st-Oct31st anything after that is illegal....late

Hey thanks. Do the cops ever actually try to catch people for running their cars in the winter on seasonal tags?

I'm actually considering a route that would pass emissions now, so this may no longer be applicable. It would still be nice to know though.

I have never had a cop look under my car or the hood. Ive only been pulled over once for streetracing and fought it in court and won.

Although I have seen people getting tickets for modified exhaust. BEWARE there is an anchorage municipal code that states you cannot have modified exhaust that is " non stock appearing" and emits more sound that the car came from the factory with. So if you try to fight this violation you will loose, most judges dismiss it if you change it back to within standards. Its only like a 65 dollar tickets and doesnt carry any points.

When do you guys have your meet....Im a Talon guy, but I'd like to hang out with you all.

Default Me Stupid

Forgive me for being stupid, but where is this CARB # located, as in, if I remove ____ the CARB # is on it and would no longer be on the car? Or is it something entirely different.

About the "louder than from factory" part, what about these new vehicles (older as well) that you get the STi muffler or Mugen "sport" muffler installed at the dealer which produces a "sportier tune"? Are those against the law? Yeah, Probably not, I guess it's more for the Coffe Can exhaust right?

That municipal code is very strict, im sure you could get around some things if it boiled down to it with a judge, my buddy told the judge he had bought the car used and wasnt aware of the code and they let him go. You can go down to the ANC police department and ask for a copy of any traffic code they have in their books. I have a couple in my car, so when they pull me over they cant give me the shaft.

The dealership STI exhaust isn't CARB approved. If you check their website, it says it's intended for offroad use only, and doesn't even include a warranty.

My bad, it does say that on the website, although the Legacy has a "performance muffler" which "Enhances vehicle performance, exhaust note and appearance." and evidently is CARB legal, or at least theres no disclaimer there. . . . . . . Whatever

Anyway, it still begs the question you originally asked, How are they passing emissions?

Their next law will be that any wing that extends past the trunk lid more that 3 inches that was not provided by the manufacturer will be illegal.

If it is a big metal wing, then you go straight to jail and your car is impounded! Maybe that part would not be as bad
