Default Good Idea or Just Plain Stupid?!

I am looking at both http://www.wheeldude.com/catalog/pro...oducts_id=5575
or
http://www.wheeldude.com/catalog/pro...roducts_id=207

i still have 5 months or so until i will actually purchase wheels
i have not yet seen a pair of 17x8.5s that i like and agree on the price

will it be great or just plain stupid if i ran either of these 17x8s wit a 10 or 20mm spacer?!

thanks
lemme know if u know wheels that are alike in both 17x8 or 17x8.5 or maybe cheaper

There are the Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 - 17 x 9 (not sure if you would want to go that wide or if there is a reason you are limited to 17 x 8.5"

http://www.teamdynamicsracing.com/pr...Pro-race12.htm
http://www.rallylights.com/Hankook/TDProRace1.2.asp

Then there is the TR Motorsports MT1 - 17 x 8.5"

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...All&sort=Brand

Why do you want to run a 10mm or 20mm spacer? I would imagine that large of a spacer would put a TON of stress on the hubs & bearings and would probably require something like the 6 Gun Racing hubs to accomodate the wheels.

i just think that 9's would rub
and the tires would prob be very expensive if im not mistaking

yea dont want to go too intense wit the spacers just to give it a lower offset look due to not so great of an offset on the wheels i was looking at

I would not recommend running a 20mm spacer just to have a flusher wheel fit. We are coming out with a new 17x8.5 / 9 wheel which should be available in 4-5 months, just in time for you to get a set

Well, if you're worried about a 17x9 rubbing, why do you think a 17x8 with a 10mm, or even worse a 20mm, spacer wouldn't rub?

haha i was thinkin 17x7.5 wit a very slight spacer
but now that i've done research... that is true!!

i am running springs from an 05 sti
and everything else is stock except an front h-brace
do u think 17x9s would run and how would my ride be?! better off with 17x8s?

17x9s from what i see are also very expensive
have not yet found a cheap one... ive found a pefect set of 17x8s and think that i can find a good sets of 17x8.5s

could i use a slight spacer to get the 17x9 look?

I wouldn't use a spacer for looks if its not necessary for clearance. If you want the flush look, get the wider wheels. The tradeoffs of using a spacer just for looks isnt really worth it.

An 18x8 with a stockish offset should fit without rubbing pretty nicely.

i really fail to undederstand why the hell so many fools want such steamroller wheels on their car for

unless you are on a track doing time attack or going for FTD
they are a HUGE waste

and for a street car they are just plain dumb for lots of reasons INCLUDING being very expensive to buy and they kill performance

yes they DO

yes they DO
define 'steamroller'.

How much tire is enough, but not too much, for you to be ok with?

235 is about the limit for practical street use. Any wider than that and you're burning up money and gas and loosing accelleration. Some people run wider for looks, and some people run wider because they autox or HPDE.
