I took my 04 Wrx in for routine service (oil change) and the guy told me it should have synthetic (x3 cost) oil put in because its turbocharged. I smelled BS and told him to use regular.
I asked my friend later, he said regular oil is fine. However, is this completely alright? Should I use synthetic oil? Is it better?

you dont NEED synthetic oil.... but it is better for your car to be running w/it. not too sure why it would cost you 3 times the amount for synthetic over regular oil.

You don't need synthetic as long as you change at regular intervals... I used regular for the first 30000miles of my suby, but i switched to synthetic recently runs noticeably smoother IMO
