Rally Stuff WRC Sardinia May16-18 talk/results spoiler**

The sixth round of the World Rally Championship represents a return to Europe after a string of three long-haul events in a row.
Sardinia lies in the Mediterranean sea between Spain and Italy, just 12 kilometres from the coast of Corsica, itself the scene for a World Rally encounter later in the season. As per previous years, the rally is based in the northern tip of the island, in the industrial port of Olbia on the Costa Smeralda coast.

The soft and almost sandy gravel roads wind through a combination of unspoiled green mountainsides that contrast with the sometime dusty and rocky routes of the lower regions. The traction and braking stability of the cars will be really tested by the loose surfaces that can cause the cars to wander as the road beneath them shifts. Eighty per cent of the local area is hilly, and while more rolling than mountainous, the stages steadily undulate.

Driver quotes
Petter Solberg: “Sardinia is very tough as the surface is very soft and there are lots of ruts on the second passes. We’ve won there before, and I will go there pushing hard, but it is never an easy rally so we will just see. The team has been working hard since Jordan so I hope we will be able to go well there.”

Chris Atkinson: “It’s important to drive smoothly and without mistakes in Sardinia as the roads are very technical and narrow but it’s a rally I enjoy. It’s my fourth year here, and my second with Stéphane, so I hope we can have a good event and run competitively. I’m not thinking about another podium finish, but just concentrating on our pace and fighting as high up as we can.”

It's gonna be interesting when SWRT debuts the new Impreza at Finland. Hopefully, a team other than Ford can take the fight to Loeb.

I'm thinking windscreen. He has not had a windscreen problem in awhile. He will loose the windscreen but then drive an amazing day and end in 1st. Then the FIA will bump him back to 12th due to his car being underwieght. That sounds about right.

I forgot to add... Petter then has to finish the stage dragging on the 1 remaining front wheel. He's forced to go soooo slow that the in-car vid sounds like this:

Stobart Ford's Gigi Galli was quickest in the shakedown for the Rally d'Italia Sardegna on Thursday morning, the sixth round in the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship.

Galli completed the 3.75 kilometre test stage near Monte Pinu - 10 kilometres west of the service park, in 3 minutes 19 seconds, setting his best time on his fourth and final pass.

Citroen's Sebastien Loeb was 'best of the rest', eight tenths slower in his C4 WRC – having opted for three passes, while Dani Sordo and Jari Matti Latvala tied for the third best time, both a further second back.

Stage summaries with Phil Mills

SS1/SS4 Monte Corvos (16.43km)
We start with a reverse direction stage from last year which is very narrow, bumpy and lots of mud. There are lots of trees that line the sides of the road so its very easy to slide off and into a tree or a tree stump at the very beginning of the rally, so we could see some casualties. It’s very, very twisty and complex before suddenly opening onto a flat out section along the main road for about two kilometres to finish.

SS2/SS5 Crastazza (33.96km)
The longest stage of the rally, about half is the same as last year. It starts very fast and flowing with a large jump before heading into the forest where it gets very tricky and we’ve seen lots of cars go off in the past. It’s really got everything, jumps, bumps, flat out bits, tight twisty corners and obstacles like narrow gates. The road surface is quite loose and rutted, it’s very long. About eight kilometres from the end we have what I can only describe as a rollercoaster. Massive speed, huge crests and dips for about two kilometres. It’s a very tricky piece of road.

SS3/SS6 Terranova (15.39km)
This is possibly the toughest stage of the rally, because when we went through on the recce it was full of mud. We’ve seen massive overnight rain this week, but here it can dry out in half a day if you get the wind and the temperature, but the mud ruts will be horrendous as they will just dry solid. Less than half the distance of Crastazza, Terranova still has everything: very twisty, very narrow, especially for the first half, huge mud and a downhill section where you can slide off even at walking speed. You can’t afford to go off here as there is no run-off and it’ll end your rally.

Less than a minute separating the top five and less than 1:30 separating the top ten looks very good.
