Default What does Cobb actually do to un-marry AP from Car if you send to them?

Hi,

Just like the title says, I want to know what Cobb actually does with the Access Port when they recieve it from someone who unsuccessfully tries to unmarry it from thier car. How do they get it ready to be used again with another ecu?

Also, any idea of the cost of doing this???

Thanks,
Carlos

i believe they reprogram the unit to a like new state. i think the cost is around 300 but you can always email the guys at COBB and find out.

Thanks Tom,

So it seems that this is one of those things that the cost vs the work done is exorbitant. Don't get me wrong, I think that the AP is well worth the selling price, BUT!! to do what I am talking about, they probably have a somewhat animated process, and put little actual effort into it. Am I wrong to think this way?

The issue is, I bought an AP over a year ago.. I was so excited because my mommy.. er, I mean my wife gave me the go ahead and then ONE week after having it on my car, the engine took a crap. Now I have the car tuned via open source software, but would really like to get the AP back into action for the map changing ability. Paying $300 for something that I already paid $595 for really sucks!

No they actually have to try to clone your ecu onn their computer and then unmarry it through plugging it into the computer. When I went into cobb after my car was totalled it took them around and hour and a half to do it, and told me about it.

If it wasn't costly to reset the AP, every dingbat on the road would flash stage 2 and hand it off to their buddy to have it reset and use it on his car.

Also, an animated process would be fun to watch. I prefer hand drawn over CGI.

Point well taken.

Still sucks for me though.

The ecu in question is now dead. The battery did not have full enough charge when trying to go back to stock map when motor started sounding sick.

I ended up going hybrid, and getting a new ecu.

"Animated" or not if you were to look at the source code and try and decipher all that digital info and try and rebuild maps or pay $300, the $300 option sounds much better.

^^ True, doing it yourself would be time consuming, but at the same time you'd think COBB would have a plug-n-play system setup in house or a back door in their own software that allows them access. We do a similar thing where I work where you can access secret parts of our systems software but only if you are connected to a certain in-house only network. Prevents outsiders from hacking the software.

I just feel kinda screwed because I already paid for the damn thing once.

So, I can send it in and have it done for $300, or I can buy a used one off of here for $3 - 350.

I guess I just won't be able to change maps around for a while.

if you still have the ecu i think cobb will do it for free... having the original ecu shows you are the original owner...call them up and tell them your situation. the 300 for the reset is to discourage people from passing it from car to car...

Just got off the phone with Shane at Cobb. I told him my little sob story, and he explained that if I send in the old ecu with the AP for them to confirm that it is fried, the cost will be $40!! If I didn't have the old, toasted ecu, they would charge $395.

I just happen to have the old ECU. Yay for me

I know. Rediculous as it sounds, I've been putting the call off for months because I was afraid of hearing that it would be hundreds of dollars. Kind of like covering your face with blankets as a child so as to not see the monster in your bedroom!

I was just going to say that if you send the old ECU in with they will probably be able to help you out. They are just trying to protect their investment but not letting you flash all your Subaru friends cars...

Yeah... um they dont need your ecu to do it. The dealer replaced my ecu before i had a chance to unmarry my AP. You just have to show a work order from a dealer showing that they replaced or reflashed your ecu. Then they will relicense it for $40. Its $350 if say you bought a married AP from someone and wanted it cleared. It took them about 45 min to fix mine. They said they had to pull it apart and hook it to the computer.

I just had to have mine done. Cost was 395 + shipping to and from. Luckily it was sold to me on ebay as "Unmarried" and I disputed and got all my money back. Basically, I paid like $430 for mine. Sorry to be the bearer of crappy news man.

I'm sure all they do to it is reflash it. Costs them nothing. They call it a "re-license." Whatever Cobb....

Still love their parts though.

Probably cost them very little but also, if everybody on earth passed around the same AP and shared them it would make them little too. Nothing is free so don't expect it. Capitalism rules.
