Default how much is a valve job going to run me?

well, im trying to by a 2001 Subaru impreza 2.5 RS

the owner reponds to me with.... "it needs a valve job... I did the timing belt and bent the valves because timing was out 90 degrees."

what is a valve job and how much is it gonna cost me?

am i better off buying a different car or will it be worth it fixing the problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated

i'm guessing you aren't going to do the work yourself, so at least $1500 if not $2000+ total. Probably will have to pull the engine, and you may end up needing new heads. If you are lucky you won't need new pistons, but if the valves slammed into the pistons hard enough you probably will need those too.

I'd stay away unless you want a project car for an sti/wrx engine swap.

This is not just a "valve job," it's a bent-valve replacement. Similar labor, but more parts this way. As was said, you might need more than just valves. Plus, that engine's going to lose a head gasket sooner or later (probably sooner), so you'll be replacing those and perhaps planing the head (hopefully won't need to plane the block/crankcases). It won't be very inexpensive, though you certainly don't need to pull the whole engine as long as the block and pistons don't need work.

Expect to put more into the vehicle than what it could be worth and in the end, you still may need a new motor depending on how much other damage occurs. Personally, I would stay away from the car.

Since the heads are already off, you visually check for piston damage, if no damage there, take the heads to a Subaru shop for an estimate to replace the valves and reinstall the heads. That should give you the $ number you need to determine if you want the car.

Good luck.
