Default Audi R8 to get 5.2L V10 from RS6 Avant, minus the turbos

Quote:
We reported back in March and April that Audi was preparing a V10-powered version of the R8, and it looks as though the first evidence of such an endeavor is on the road. However, while the V10 R8 will use the same 5.2L V10 found in the Audi RS6 Avant, the R8's powerplant will ditch the wagon's twin-turbo setup.

Audi is reportedly loaning a pre-production prototype of the new V10-powered car to a select few current R8 owners.
Not only will the new model sport two more cylinders, but it will also feature new front and rear bumpers and a revised exhaust system.

It remains unclear what Audi will call the new model, but Autocar reports that the RS8 nameplate is likely, leaving the RS version of the A8 in limbo. However, R10 still remains a possibility.

The 4.2L V8-powered R8 makes 420 horsepower, and it is expected that the new V10 engine will bump the R8's rating to at least 500 horsepower. The V10-powered Audi R8 is expected to bow in September with an on sale date of early to mid 2009

I would do terrible, awful things for an R8, let alone an RS8/R10.

Don't know who put this on the youtube, but I think Audi is not going to be very happy about it.

i love this car, it has this supercar element about it, while still being pretty much daily drivable, for not THAT much money if you can get one @ MSRP. I know $125,000 isnt chump change, but its a hell of a lot more in reach than a ferrari, gt2, lambo etc etc. Same price as a porsche turbo or sl amg benz but with more flair

V12 TDi FTW. Seriously, though, it seems like they chose this V10 because it's sitting in the parts bin. I hope it is more than just an RS6 motor sans turbos. If not, I would much prefer if they pressurized the existing V8. Love the R8 though.

I like the R8, but being that it looks like a supercar, I want it to accelerate like one. Having 60K sedans like the IS-F, M3 and C63 being able to be a rough match in 1/4 times does not compute for a 100K+ mid-engine 2-seater.

Yes I know amazing handling, blahblah. That excuse can work for something that costs what a Miata or even Elise costs, not for what the R8 goes for.

The RS6 motor sans turbos is basically the gallardo motor, so thats hardly a bad thing. The v8 in the RS4 and R8 is not suitable to turbocharge due to high compression and lightweight internals etc its too on edge to take the abuse.

^^^ I thought MTM did pressurize the V8?

The V10 is up .2L from the Gallardo, doesn't rev as high, and doesn't put out as much HP, so I'm not as enthused. At the price point that this car will bring in V10 form, I want to be very enthused.

I thought the issue with the turbocharged V-10 R8 prototype was cooling issues? Deleting the turbos would solve that, but I don't know the relationship of this engine to the Gallardo engine.

+1 for the V-12 TDI!! What were the numbers I saw the other day- 530 hp and 750 ft-lbs?!! Apparently they need to design a new transmission- surprise, surprise

Default Audi R8 V10 Vs Evotech Audi Rs6

Dragtimes.info compares the R8 V10 with an Evotech-tuned Audi RS6 packing a healthy 750 hp. Lovely stuff.

It's the V8..

Look at what whp the thing makes "stock" according to the dyno... Those numbers could only be from the V8.. Unless of course they have a dynojet masquerading as a Mustang dyno.

Good call, I would rather save the extra $30,000 for the V10 and just Turbo the V8.

I can dream right...

Nope, you can now buy the R8 in either V8 or V10. Save $30,000 when going for the 8.
