Default Anyone else having trouble buying 205/50-16 tires because of load rating??

Hello all,
I recently put an order into tirerack for Kumho 712 W rated 205/50-16 tires.
Shortly after that I got a phone call from them telling me that my order had to be cancelled because the load rating of the 205/50-16 tires is too low compared to the stock 205/55-16's

Has this happened to anyone yet?
Any work around?

HELP!!
I really want the 205/50-16's!!

You should actually get 225/50/16's for an RS on stock RS wheels. They won't throw off the speedo like a 205/50/16 will. Plus, the extra width will actually enhance your performance.

If they ask again, tell them they are for your Justy or Mini or 3-cylinder Ford Festiva; or that you're using them to do landscape in your yard!

They are right to warn you about load rating, but I think you should have a right to blow up some tires and flip your car.

I'm all for extra width.
I don't want the tall sidewall though.
Especially with the Kumho's.
I run 215/40-16 for autocross on my stock RS 16" wheels.
Very sticky, due in part to the increased width, but also to the stiff sidewall.

I don't care about the speedometer being fast, helps keep my out of tickets.

I'm actually putting these 205/50-16's on WRX wheels.
16 x 6.5" width, don't know how a 225 would like that thin of wheel.

I thought 205/50-16 was the "go fast" recommendation made by most people, in particular, Mike Shields?

Ray,
They are right to warn, after that it's my decision.

The great legal system in our country, and greedy individuals who don't take responsibility for their own actions, has made it necessary for them to take a different approach and just plain refuse to sell a tire to anyone that doesn't match the OEM load rating.

A 205/50-16 tire has a 1200 lb load rating.
4800 lbs total load rating.
OK, the RS has 58/42 weight distribution.
So, the front tires have a load rating of 2400 combined.
Weight of car 4000 lbs * .58 = 2320

Dynamic loading would make it close.

I've been autocrossing the 215/40-16's for 2 years now.
15 or so races, no issues.

IowaRS - I totally agree with you. And please don't take the "blow and flip" comment personally. And I'm serious about just telling Tirerack it's for a different car. Perhaps a 2400lb Civic or Corolla or something.

It's unfortunate that the tort system in this country, along with the Firestone fiasco, has made Tirerack (or other business) become so ridiculous about liability.

I didn't take it personally. I'm just upset right now

Well, I did some thinking.
I started wondering what about 17" and 18"???
It turns out that tirerack recommends 215/45-17 for the 2.5RS coupe.

What do you know, the load rating is 1201 on those too.

I called tirerack, they sold me the 205/50-16's.
Problem solved, until next time.......................

I don't know what I'll do when I need another set of autocross tires
