Default 2009 Non-navi WRX stereo Ipod interface questions

I bought a 2009 non navigation WRX stereo and I found all the wiring information I need but there's one thing I can't find. I got the stereo on craigslist and it came with the iPod connectivity wiring and the little box too but that wiring has me confused.

Here's the back of the stereo.

That black 20 pin connector is used only for the iPod connectivity kit, correct? It isn't used for the stereo's main power or wiring for speakers? Because the iPod wiring I have is a big harness and has 14 wires in it.

I unplugged all the wires from one end and took the 20 pin connector off in hopes of putting a 14 pin connector on it for my '99 RS. I already know that I'm supposed to need the white 20 pin on the right but what are all these extra wires for? To me it looks like the iPod only used 3 or 4, and those are attached to the wires I took out of the connector (there are a few with 2 wires going to 1 pin)

Just wondering what all these extra wires are for and if I could get away with putting the 14 pin connector on it and installing it tonight instead of ordering the new 20 pin connector. And if that is all for the iPod then what connects to the female end that I just disassembled?

That won't work.

The white 20-pin socket is for the power and speaker connections. You must use that, by assembling an adapter to connect to your car's older-style 14-pin power/speaker harness.

The cable in your pictures is strictly for the iPod accessory. The HU's black 20-pin port actually works on a bus. In many cases (as with yours), Subaru's cable includes a pass-through socket, enabling you to daisy-chain multiple accessories (provided that all of them are compatible with the HU and won't interfere with each other). You should restore the black connector the way it was, and not use it. Wrap self-adhesive foam tape around it to prevent rattling.

I was thinking it wasn't gonna work like that. Guess I'm just surprised that Subaru included so many wires with the iPod connectivity kit and that the wires all connected on the opposite side of the plug where you'd expect them to go. I actually have your 20 pin harness on your website favorited, I was even thinking of PMing you directly. I suppose I'll order that one of these days when I continue fooling with it.
