Default possible to change A/C compressor clutch?

My wifes 96 Legacy Outback's A/C doesnt work. I was gonna go to Auto Zone today to try and recharge the freon. I guess it turned out that the freon wasnt the problem. The A/C compressor's clutch wasnt turning. He told me it's possible to replace that if you can find it, but you might take a risk because the compressor itsself could be bad as well.

So I guess my question is, what should I do? Take the chance and get the clutch, or just buy a new compressor? Where can I find a good price on a compressor? It's already about 100 degrees here in Las Vegas, so I'd like to get this soon.

All comments are appreciated.

From what I understand the clutch on our compressors cannot be easily serviced. Mine went out too and I had to replace the whole thing. You might be able to get a good deal on a junkyard compressor - I think they are pretty interchangeable between others Legacy/Outback/Imprezas.
