Default Can't find pic comparing Hella 500ff to OEM '02 fog lamp

Anyone have one?

Yes, I know that 500ff is not a fog, and they do make a fog version. I just want a direct compairison of OEM '02 WRX fog to regular 500ff..

Also, anyone know if the mesh fog covers will fit over 500ff?

This is like asking for a comparison picture between a wheel and a rutabaga. They're just not the same thing.

Also, there is no 500FF fog version as you seem to think there is. There is a 500 fog (in both amber and clear) but they're the older style that doesn't use the FF technology. The only one using the FF technology is a driving light. The 500FF driving light will be vastly superior to your high beams, but you won't get the most benefit from the light putting it down in the stock fog location. However, it will fit easily into your stock fog locations with the correct bracket and the mesh cover will fit over the top.

I understand that they're not the same.

Sorry, I stand corrected... 500 fog

I'd still like an output comparison

How about also a comparison of OEM to Hella 500 fog lamps...?

OK, give me a while, I might have that. I'm SURE I have pictures of 500 fog output, I just don't know if I have a direct comparison.

OK, I don't actually have a direct comparison, sadly. Hopefully this will be helpful.

This is the 500 fogs with the bugeye stock high beams and low beams on. You can see that they 500 fogs are nearly as bright as the stock high beams but spread MUCH MUCH wider to the sides. They obviously do not project as far, however.

Here is just the 500 fogs on by themselves with the exact same settings/exposure as above:

55W (stock). I think they're H3's for that unit.

is the yellow from a film or painted lens? it seems really deep. did they come that way? are they the old yellow fluted lens models? for some reason i thought they were making a ff reflector fog light.

That's the natural color of the 500 fogs if you get the Amber version. It also comes in a Clear version. I'm not 100% sure where the color comes from. The bulb is clear and the lens is clear so there must be some kind of filter internal to the lamp. I haven't disassembled one to find it yet.

anyone still sell the fog 500?

Are there any other lamp upgrades I could get to put in the fog location, that I could use with other cars on the road?

Roads going up to Bellingham can get pretty dark, but there still are a couple other motorists on the road at night...

The 500 fog (amber or clear) is still widely available both in stores and online.

It sounds like what you're really looking for is a driving light. Driving lights add to your stock high beams. You wire them to the same trigger that turns your highs on and off so that both the highs and the driving lights flip on and off at the same time when you flip the control stick on the steering column. Anything bright enough and focused enough to actually help you drive on a dark road will be legally required to switch off for oncoming traffic. Anything you can legally leave on for oncoming traffic is going to be a fog-pattern light and won't reach farther that your stock low beams.

Both the 500FF and the 1000FF would fit (the 1000FF is a really tight fit and I doubt the mesh covers would fit) in your stock fog location and would help you see better than your stock lights. That being said, ANY driving light is going to work better at the height of the stock headlights rather than down in the stock fog light locations. By putting it that near the road, you reduce its ability to project down the road. Still better than nothing.

i have the 1000s in my fogs.. what's weird was that i aimed them as lowest as they could possibly go, and the output was somehow higher than the lowbeams with the hella brackets.. i don't even dare using those on the road

i recently made a how-to for wiring a pair of aux lights to turn on with highbeams. let me see if i can dig it up for you. its simple and it uses the stock fog switch.

oh no no, please don't go through the trouble.. i intentionally wanted to run them with the lowbeams if i had to when it's too dark.. i almost never use high beams.. i'm going to have hids in my retros later on, so that'll be plenty for street driving.. any aux lights i'll have will be for itn and offroading.. thanks for looking out though=)

The problem with this is that the only thing you can run with low beams is a true fog pattern light. Anything else will end up blinding oncoming traffic.

Curious... why wouldn't you want the high beams on at the same time then?

well for one, i don't really like rewiring things.. in the case i go back to stock fogs, i don't want to go through the trouble of rewiring 'em back to its original condition.. i'm more of a plug and play type of guy.. when i put the 1000s in my fogholes, it kind of cost me more than i expected.. i found the opposite side of the fog harness from sgp which was an extra 65bucks i didn't plan on spending.. crimped 'em onto the 1000s and voila, pnp.. but ultimately, i'm glad i went that route

second, i have 2more sets of 1000s going onto a lightbar and i plan on getting one more pair of lights<haven't decided yet>

third, for some reason or other, i just don't like using highbeams.. i can't even guess or have the slightest idea, i just don't=/

so in the case i do go offroading, hid lowbeams along with multiple driving lights will be plenty.. and of course, there is the possibility of leveling out the lights to where i need them exactly

unfortunately, i've got some issues stewing about in my household.. so if i must sell my car to do what i need to, i'll sell the car in the condition it should be

if you want to not mess with stock wiring, you need a relay harness.
not using highbeams is a terrible idea... you either need better highbeams or to get over it because if you get good lights, the lowbeams will stay on and the highbeams will put more light further down the road and above cutoff so you can see everything.

i hope you're getting new optics for the hid's, otherwise you'll lose highbeams with the 9007 and you won't know what you're missing. i LOVE using my jdm's highbeams with the lowbeam still on and the 1000ff's hitting. it's one of the best things that can happen in my car

Does anyone have pictures of regular bugeye headlamps w/ 500FFs? Not Fog 500s?
