Unhappy blown fuse(s), any ideas?

Had it happen twice in the last 2 days. Was driving home from work yesterday when the stock dash went out and the interior light came on. No turn signals, no windows, but my aftermarket gauges worked fine. Tracked it down to a 15A fuse under the dash labeled "TURN/BACK/SRS". I replaced it.

Was driving to work this morning. Was almost into work when I took off and humped on the gas (mmmm, boost) and pop, it went out again. Car bucked a little like it had fuel cut. ***? I have to run at lunch and buy a 15A fuse, but I'm sure it'll just happen again.

TURN = turn signals
SRS = air bag stuff (uh oh)
BACK = ???

Could the BACK part be referring to the fuel pump and the trunk light? Maybe backup lights?

DAMNIT! Just when I'm so close to putting in the TEC-II...

No idea what your problem is, but a few ideas on how to track it down...

1. Get a wiring diagram and figure out everything that's connected to that fuse. Alternately, get somebody with a wiring diagram to tell you. Alternately #2, yank the fuse and keep track of everything that doesn't work.

2. Track down everything that is on that fuse and eliminate them all until you know which one is blowing the fuse. This problem way weird if it just blows while you're rolling down the road... even if it's blowing when you're stomping on the gas, that's weird if it's just the SRS, Turn signals, and back-up lights (and clearly it's the dash illumation, too).

3. If you've made mods involving the electrical system that are tapping into that fuse, I'd look there, first.

4. It's weird (suspicious weird, not Twilight Zone weird) that the PDL's quit and the dome light comes on when the fuse is blown. I'd take a look at the relay/board that runs the power door locks next...

5. If you're willing to live dangerously and you're stumped and the car's out of warranty and you don't want to pay a pro to fix it, you could put in a heavier fuse and watch for smoke... I don't recommend this, though.

Good luck,

Ben

Thanks for the advice.

I had the fuse blow on the way home today. This time it went out while I was boosting and hard shifting, which causes the drivetrain to jump around a little.

Anyhow, while the fuse was out I ran my OBD-2 stuff and it reported 2 codes:

P0462 Fuel level sensor circuit low input
P0480 Cooling fan 1 control circuit malfunction

My question is, how the hell would the cooling fan be affected by this fuse??? It's fuse #18, FWIW.

Anybody know if I can see the vehicle speed sensor wire/harness from above? I can see the O2 sensor wires, but I'm wondering if the speed sensor wire isn't the cause of all this (if it really is on this circuit).

Does anybody have some hard information about fuse #18 and what it's connected to so I can do some troubleshooting?

Sounds like you're shorting out and that is causing enough drop to temporarily stop other things from working...

Like Bimmer said, check anything that you're done on that circuit.

After a few days playing "find the short", I still haven't come up with any answers. But, after jostling around the wiring harness that sits under the throttle body and runs into the passenger side firewall, the short has disappeared. I don't have a great feeling about this as it probably means it will be back. Luckily the wiring harness only has about a gazillion wires so it shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Dunno if it matters, but with the short cleared, the circuit's resistance is about 65 Ohms.

Still in need of MY98 wiring diagrams...
