Default Bad Idea

Three years ago when I bought my "beater" 2.2 litre Legacy "L" sedan I wanted nice cheap inconspicuous transportation that would brake and handle decently but not be especially flashy. After driving the car for some time and deciding its actually not a bad ride (even if it is SLOW) I have started to make changes to improve upon the cars appearance.

A month or so ago I got what I thought was a brilliant idea. Dressing up the grill section would (I thought at the time) make the car look really nice.

Go ahead and laugh:

What I thought would help highlight the cars gold trim and nice looking wheels looks basically pretty "tacky", IMHO.

Yeah I admit it, I have no real sense as to what will look good until I actually see it.

Can anyone suggest something I could do to the grill that would look nice ?

Thanks !

Chop out the fins so it's just the rim and a floating constelation

i had a mesh grill on the same car as yours except mine was blue, and it looked great. until i hit a deer at 75mph. the car is still recovering. thankfully, one of the nasioc members was kind enough (is kind enough) to drive up and bring me some parts to fix it!
also, i got the grill from someone in the classifieds, so if you dont want to mod yours
im sure you can find one.

I think it looks good and unique.

Anyone have a wagon in Sandstone Metallic? Almost got one but could only find Brightons with that color at the time.

Thank you. It certainly does look "unique".

I took a photo of a Legacy Wagon at last years 'Wicked Big Meet' I am not sure if it is sandstone Metallic or not though:

Sandstone Metallic was a gold color, but no quite gold. I thought it would look good with blacked-out windows.........

Can't go wrong with JDM, but you did not make that one. Mod everything to your heart's content. :-)

You can always Paint it Black (capitolized for the Stones reference)

But I would do what Mranlet suggested, it looks pretty good.

Yes, The GTB Grille looks awesome. Those grilles are extremely rare out here in the U.S.A. so almost nobody knows what they are. Unfortunately to get this particular grille to fit my car I would have to purchase an entire GTB bumper assembly (with the shallow drop for the grille), and paint the entire thing to match. Just my luck after doing all that, some dufus would back into me.

Yeah, I like black and gold together. I think this particular grill might look nice on a black car... but it looks totally out of place on my Ruby Mica (dark red) car.

No, you could buy a later year bumper or a GT bumper or an Outback bumper that has the dip in the middle for the taller grille.

For the GT in the background yes, quite right. For the red 'beater' in the foreground, no, it plugs right in. I know this for certain. Got a mate in the states who put one on his brighton just fine. That bumper on the red one is the same (externally at least, i think the bumper beams are different) as the non "B-spec" JDM models.

Sorry, I'm just being difficult aren't I...

Yeah, pretty much ANY USDM '97-'99 bumper assembly has a dip in the middle of the bumper that would be more than big enough for a JDM grille... the problem with those bumpers is that that "dip" is actually too much... for the later JDM Legacy BD grilles... I would be left with a 1.5 cm gap between the bottom of the grille and the top of the bumper.

Norabder managed SOMEHOW to find an earlier years JDM grille that fits his '95 Legacy perfectly. I doubt that many people are still selling 12 year old grilles, but if I were more alert maybe someday I could find one (with a little luck).

Nope. ReubenH you are filling me with optimism... tell me more about were I can find a JDM grill that will fit my "early" style Legacy bumper with out a dip ???

If what you are telling me is "true", than you are being extremely helpful.. not difficult in the slightest. Of course I am convinced that the JDM grilles for these early cars are hard (impossible?) to find.. So any information you can provide me with is extremely helpful.. at least if it is true.

Ebay is where I got the grill that fits, only problem is the crome paint has started chipped off might have to repaint it someday.

I also have a GTB grill with the red emblem. I bought late at night thinking it would fit. Still debating what to do with it.

try gold wheel paint or body color. But first do what Mranlet said, i did that on my old leggy and painted it body color and it looked real hot.

Well, i live in NZ if you didn't notice, and i know of a place in south auckland that has hundreds of the things... We are drowning in JDM parts here. Finding a gtb one would be very hard, finding one that's not chipped wuld also be hard, but possible. Worst case scenario you get one that fits perfectly, but dosen't look as cool.

I only noticed last night the GTB one is actually taller, but i know it still fits, cause that guy with the brighton used that grille. i'm affraid he doesn't have a good pic posted up, but here it is anyway. and it's a little broken sadly

http://fwa2500.deviantart.com/art/New-Bumper-78794162
http://fwa2500.deviantart.com/art/New-Teeth-77890719

As you can see he got a GTB bumper later anyway.

Compare it to my old LX (same as an L), and my new GTB. You can see the LX ones identical pretty much, the GTB's lower lip goes a little lower, and the bumper acomidates this. but it's still no where near USDM GT 'low' as you mentioned. Also note, the GTB ones are smoked, not silver, for extra win.

(You'll have to ignore the mesh, that was my brothers idea. there's pleanty of diferent gille bits that go in the middle, we had one of the uglier ones.)
