Default Subaru / Toyota coupe master thread *merged*

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/28/s...rsion-only-in/

"Inside Line is reporting that the new, RWD coupe being developed by Subaru and Toyota will only be sold as a Subaru in markets outside of Japan, while the Toyota version will remain exclusive to the Land of the Rising Sun. The report goes on to say that the coupe will be based off the Subaru Impreza (despite Toyota/Subaru's own press release saying that it's an "all-new" platform) and that power will be provided by a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter boxer engine producing 220 hp at 6,500 rpm.

Toyota and Subaru are using the Integra Type-R as the performance benchmark for the new coupe, with a 103-inch wheelbase, a 2+2 seating layout and a curb weight of 2,866 pounds. As reported before, the coupe will debut in 2011 and pricing is expected to begin just south of $20,000."

wow! that car looks good!
I thought they said that the Subaru's model would be AWD since RWD is not a Subaru thing.
I just wish this thing had a Turbo. I guess the WRX will need a power bump too.

They said they were exploring the possibility, they never said it would be AWD.

As long as I can drop an STI engine in it I'm good to go.

That looks nice. I hope the curb weight is accurate, but I have a feeling it will be more like 3100 lbs.

keep the weight down, slap on a turbo on the engine and i'll be driving one. RWD is even better.

So the current 2.5 makes 175 hp but the new 2.0 is going to make 220 without revving to the sky? Toyota's engineers really hit a home run if they can pull this one off.

If everything that's predicted turns out to be true I will buy one in a heartbeat.

I'd hit iT!!

As much as I'd jump at a $20k coupe my best guess is it will probably $35k by 2011.

At what RPMS does the 2.5l make its 175 HP at? Lower than 6500 I'm sure. So, maybe this motor does spin pretty well. With peak power at 6500, I'm guessing it revs to 7500 or so.

I'm pretty sure this thing won't have any torque!
I'm really crossing my fingers for a Turbo version.

Very awesome looking, but a RWD Subaru? That's gonna put a kink in their marketing strategy. Do it anyways!!!!!

The '07 Legacy is rated at 175@6000. Even if this revs to 7500, 20% less displacement means coming up with an extra 45 horsepower will take more than just ~500 revs at redline. I hope they pull this off and then bring some of that magic into the Legacy STi. Please?

EDIT: Doing the math, if this engine makes as much torque at redline (assuming 7500) as the previous 2.5 did at peak power (6000), it will have 219 horsepower. If it makes as much torque at redline as the 2.5 did at peak, it will have over 240 hp. That's a pretty tall order without some new technology...or really high compression.

this 2.0 sounds like its from the NA STI concept with the 2.0.... if you look at that engine it looks incredibly compact

^^AWD is impractical because the engine will be mounted farther back to improve the weight balance

Heavier, slower, worse weight distribution, etc. and its a sports car. All-weather utility is hardly a concern.

Plus, its not exactly going to be making the power that typically seen in pure sports machines with AWD.

Hard to think of a good reason to make a 200 hp sports car awd...

Flame suit on!
