Question Mechanical to electronic speed cable?

Is it possible to have a electronic speedo somehow work with a car that came with a mechanical speedo?

I dont believe so as the ECU is the one feeding the speedo the correct speed, now i COULD be wrong if and only if the gauge takes its reading directly from the speed sensor and not from the ECU itself...
