Default How to get an AVI file to work on my machine?

It's been a long long time since I've used that format, and since I reformatted my machine using an unregistered copy of WinXP, I can't get the AVI file I downloaded from newsgroups to play. I get audio but no video. The file is a movie (Jumper) if you're wondering.

I can't upgrade to media player 11 since it has to authenticate windows, so I'm stuck using Win media 10.

Are there any other programs I can use to watch this film?

Thanks in advance.

PS: There's a reason I'm using an un-lic copy of XP, long story and has to do with work.

It's not a WMP problem, it's a codec problem.

Also, Jumper was a big steaming pile of ****. Don't waste your time.

Google VLC viewer. Freebie and it will play everything.

Maybe you need the right codec? I think there's a pack you can download that has most of the one's you'll ever need in it.

I knew it was a codec issue... just was lazy and didn't feel like searching for lame media player garbage... figured teh OT would know of a better player because I hate media player... It's been a while since I've watched AVI files on my machine and didn't feel like dealing with it, and why waste time when I have the help of a great hive mind, aka; OT.

This VLC player is EXACTLY the type of program that I wanted.

VLC > Media player/Quick time

On a semi related note, why on EARTH does Real Player exist? Not only is it a big fat virus + media player, but it sucks the balls of a donkey. I can't believe it still exists after all these years, and I can't believe people actually STILL use this turd of a program.

RealAlternative FTW.
But, whenever I see anything encoded in .rm it almost immediately gets deleted.

I heard that. I can't believe people/companies actually encode things in RM format. WTF are they thinking?

When a company does that, I immediately lose a lot of respect for them.
