Default STi v. 911 Turbo

Sometimes I surprise even myself. The other night on a closed section of road I was challenged by a $210,000 2001 Porsche 911 twin turbo. I actually pulled ahead of him up to 100kph. After that he beat me by a 5-6 car lengths. I did let off a bit at the end as it was clear that the race was over (winter tires and high speed = bad idea).

Still surprising as I figured I'd be walked all over given the retail price differences. No wonder they call the STi a "porsche killer" overseas.

Edit: D'oh. I put this in the wrong forum.

You're kidding right? C&D clocked the 2001 911 Turbo at 3.9 for 0-60 and [email protected] in the 1/4. Unless your car is MUCH more than a stock STi swap the 911 driver wasn't trying or couldn't drive. Or maybe it wasn't a turbo, just an NA dressed up as one.

The fastest stock Impreza is arguably the STi RA 4-6 which has ultra short gearing and less weight; it will do around 4.3 0-60 and low [email protected] in the 1/4 (that is if you give it a clutch busting, tranny smashing launch!) A non RA/R Sti will be a bit slower than that. An RS with an STi swap shoud be a bit slower (but not much) still as it has a sunroof and heavier bumper beams.

There was a guy in the UK who had a V5 with a built engine, FMIC, engine management, etc. and he ran under 4 in 0-60 and a low 12 in the 1/4.

When in the UK, I was driving a friend's lightly modified STi. We came across what appeared to be a GT2/3 and gave chase. It was very even until I pegged the 180 KPH speedo and I felt like a hero. But in the sober light of day I knew he couldn't be trying or I'd have been left in the dust.

I'm not knocking your car; I'm sure it's a beaut and faster than most cars on the road. But in the case of a 911 Turbo, we're just outgunned.

turbo wasn' t trying... that thing is 415 horse power.... then he tried after 100.... as he saw you racing him... i simply tied an old old 911 porsche in my old setup... the 2002 will kill anything you need a front mount 22psi on a big turbo even on a STI... sorry not busting you or anything just telling the truth.. it has more torque at lower rpm and higher hp at high rpm...

Hey Micheal...

That was most likely Mr. Copland you were following (his plate is COREL). Was it silver? I followed him once with my souped up talon last year, he doesn't seem to drive that aggressively. Kinfd of cool to see that little spoiler coming up and down...

But again, just being able to keep up with this thing is amazing...

The guy in the Porshe must have been trying somewhat. That STI is fast, like make your eyes bleed fast. It amazing just to be in the same league as a 911 turbo. Hope everyone reralizes that you could buy six STI conversions and still have money left for the drive thru for the cost of that 911.

P.S. Thanks a lot for the ride, Michael. Now I'm completley bored with my RS.

This wasn't a fly by race..... or by chance meet.....

The 996 owner (911 AWD TT) wanted to give a go with Doof.... cause he easily beat a 00 Mustang Gt.....

so the 996 owner to see how the STI would fare against his car..... the 996 owner has been at the local drag way and his best time was 12.38 sec..... (completly stock).....

Saw a tape from Japan that had all the big cars on the track. Sti, EvoVII, Nissan Sky___, 911, M3, Corvette. The 911 took the race, with the Evo and Nissan right on it's tail. Surprising the rest of the pack were well behind. The Sti was up there at first but lost it when the cars hit the straightaway......didn't seem to have the power to hang but the handling was there.

They're talking about the 911 Turbo not the NA one Dan.

Yes a car that can muster 12.3 in the quarter is incredibly fast and would make short work of a an STi if both let it all hang out but in the real world it may depend on who decides to abuse their car more off the launch!

Wouldn't the 996 be harder to launch because of the rear weight bias and all that torque lending to more wheelspin? Also if it's a tip tranny then it'll start in 2nd unless he brake torques off the line. I don't think a 996 starting off in 2nd gear leisurely will keep pace with an STi that is launched hard. That could be your split second differential right there.

No doubt he'd cream an STi off a roll though. but hey at least you hung with him for a bit, haha, the rest of us would be cannon fodder!

I don't know about the 911 above, but the new turbo has AWD.
