Default 2006 Legacy, Need help replacing piece of interior trim./taking apart console.

Hey all,

Here is my dilemma. I had an air freshener "pine tree" hanging from my shifter knob which seemed to chemical burn the plastic of my console really bad!! So bad, that initially I thought I had cracked the plastic!

Anyhow, How can I replace the piece of trim that lines the center console? You can see it in both picture. I'd like to replace the middle piece that encircles the shifter knob, but that piece is not burned too bad.

I got a print out from my dealer of the center console, though it doesn't help me too much. the piece in question appears to just snap out on the top, and is screwed in on the bottom, though the screw is not accessible w/io removing another piece/pieces.

Any help would be much appreciated. Also, in addition to spending $80 on the replacement piece, is there any fix anyone could recommend? Perhaps a light sanding/painting?

Thanks!
J

Very easy...

1.Take a credit card and slide under the chrome trim surrounding the shifter. Once up a bit just pull it strait up. It is only held in by friction with some felt material.

2. Slide fingers in gap left by chrome trim towards the bottom of the shifter and pull up on the grey surrond. The piece that is not badly damaged, not the actual shifter.

3. You will see a screw holding the badly damaged piece on at the bottom. Remove screw, pull up on trim, then towards the back of the car and it will be out.

Instead of buying a new one, I would just repaint that one. It is hard plastic so just scuff it up and find a matching color and paint it.

That worked, thanks very much! I painted it with import gray spray paint I purchased at PepBoys and it worked great! Granted, the paint color is *slightly* off and the feel is a little less smooth, but I much prefer how it is compared to spending almost $80!
