Default What makes a supercar a supercar?

So I am watching Motorweek and they are driving the R8 and they call it a super car. I am wondering what classifies it as a supercar?

Is it:

Style?

Speed?

Insane price?

exotic material?

If it is speed then the R8 didn't make it. That thing was slow 13.1 in 1/4 mile and 0-60 in 4.5 secs.

Style IMO is ugly! The front reminds me of a RX8 the side of a TT with weird panel of different pant key and the rear well, the rear is not sexy at all.

Perhaps you should not limit speed to a straight line. On an average track, for instance, it outruns a Porsche turbo, which many consider a supercar (not sure I do), as well as a few other unquestionable "super" cars.

Not thinking the R8 is a supercar either btw.

This is like arguing what is a "sports" car. Opinions.

Performance + price + exclusivity + looks + brand = supercar.

You must have all of the above. This is why, for example, a Z06 is not a supercar. It fails in several categories even though it performs very well.

Good point! Exclusivity, that makes sense. Are all Ferraris in the supercar category? I see a quite a few 360s and 430s around my part of town, not so exclusive imo.

This is it. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, Pagani, Saleen = supercar.
Audi R8 != supercar

I didn't say it was slow but price didn't equal the performance. I guess when I think supercar I think low 12s.

Was it the manual transmission or semi-automatic?

A weenie launch program like US market Ferraris had would give numbers that don't match real performance.

I never liked the R8 and would love to know why they underestimated the price right before it's release.

But there's exceptions: Ford GT or whatever that thing is called. More so the Ford GT40.

Also, how did you forget McLaren. And the Porsche Carrera GT is definitely a supercar.

Because I'm not about to name every single supercar out there.
Porsche Carrera GT and Mercedes SLR McLaren are others, but I was just giving a sampling.

i would probably say only the super hign enders are super cars. the ferrari 360 and 430's not so much. maybe not even porsches really either. all great performers and all that but i'd put super car up there with zonda, ferrari enzo, saleen s7, ford gt(???) i like it anyway.that mclaren one-and so on.. i guess the r8 would be a toss up, goes either way. maybe a semi super car. sorry about my shtty typing.

you guys beat me to it! all good names in supercars i'd say.

Reminds me of the season 1 Top Gear where they took to an elementary school:
a) Skyline R34 GT-R
b) Pagani Zonda
c) Ferrari (F355?)
d) TVR Tuscan
e) Lamborghini Countach

the kids voted on which was the coolest car. Countach won, hands down.

Well I would say that if it's a car, and it's super, then it's a supercar.

Sweet!

I'm gonna say hp figures. Anything 400-600 is supercar (provided it handles well), above is hypercar, but only because I like the word hyper, otherwise it's pointless and useless.

Cars like Zondas, Veyrons, LP640s have been dubbed as 'hypercars' which are implied to be a level above supercars.

plus i agree that a defining feature of supercars/hypercars is that they're focused and purpose-built simply to go fast and hold two ppl max (3 in the case of the McLaren F1) and eschew all practicality.

thus cars like the AM DBS and Ferrari 599 GTB are cars with obvious supercar performance, they are considered more semi-practical GT cars with a usable trunk (making them good for a weekend getaway trip with real luggage). I think the new GTR knocks itself out of the supercar category for the same reason, its just too usable everyday as a practical car with rear seats and a real trunk for storage.

fast sedans like Stis, Evos, Audi RS4s, and others with sub 5 sec supercar speed and performance are still....4 door sedans, AND based on regular family car platforms, can't be true supercars.

OP: so to answer your question, the R8 may not be the fastest, but its a borderline sports car/supercar. It's clearly not built to be a daily commuter car/family car/any other practical category, even tho is has easy drivability and reliability, which takes away from the supercar qualities.

and why do you care about what Motorweek thinks anyway? they don't know anything and their reviews are terrible.

Wether you think the style is ugly or not is irrelevant, the R8 has aggressive and supercar styling. opinions on the looks of the veyron are split as well, some ppl think its gorgeous while others think its ugly as ****, but nobody debtates its a supercar.
