Default Electrical Grimlins

Update - I replaced the combo stalk for the headlight controls and removed my gauges, the problem still persists. I noticed that the speedo and odo stop working when I switch the headlights to "on" and star working when "off". The ABS light reacts the same way, but it also comes on when in Reverse, and my headlights turn off when in reverse. WTF is going on lol... anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? I have the FSM but these wiring diagrams are jibberish to me. Automotive electrical is not my thing. I just want to try everything I can before I have to take it in somewhere. Thanks

I have a couple things going on, and need some advice/help. It started off when my dash cluster, hvac, and radio lights went out. When my headlights were off I could see the radio light up and the odometer light on. when I switch the stalk on for the headlights the odometer light goes off and the radio readout dims down really low. I do have 3 gauges installed, but I have had them in for a long while now and they are operating just fine. Then the other day i noticed that my headlights were on all the time, even when the stalk is in the off position. And yesterday I noticed as I was backing into the garage that my ABS light comes on when I put the car into reverse, then goes back off once I take it out. Any help is appreciated, especially about the ABS light, as that one kinda bothers me.

Thanks

There may be problem with the dimmer control module causing this trouble.

Last night it got worse. I fired up the car and my abs light came on, and stayed on, without putting it in reverse. And I also had a CEL. My speedometer isnt working and my odometer has ceased to operate. Oh yeah, and my foglights wont turn on. I need some help, anyone have suggestions? I am desperate. Thanks

The CEL light may be on due to the problem with the speedometer. The speed sensor may be bad and this would explain a few things. Have the codes read to help with the diagnosis on these problems.

You might want to go over the ground wires under the hood and clean the connections. This may help solve some things like the ABS light turning on.

I agree the CEL is most likely a speed sensor error. Did you mess with the stock gauges at all?

I would check the wiring for the gauges you installed, if something shorted out it could cause a problem like that. Run over that wiring and see if it helps, maybe even try just unplugging them or pulling their fuse and see if the problem subsides. If it doesn't then it's an OEM problem, the stalk seems the most susceptible to wear.

Thanks for the responses, I'll check that stuff. I didn't suspect the gauges i installed because they are working normal and are daisy chained into the Hvac/radio harnesses. I will look into them though. I appreciate it.

Update : Tore the dash apart and found nothing. I think some of the problem is just in the light stalk. So I will be replacing that soon. The CEL was from the speedo sensor which i just unplugged and it worked for about 2 days and has stopped again. But I have another problem now also, It seems I am hitting fuel cut at weird times in the power band and sometimes i get a funny idle. I really want to hit this thing with a sledge hammer...

Before replacing the light stalk you should verify it is bad. I suggest you get a service manual to help you solve these problems. It will save you time and money.

Part of the problem at least you are having sounds like a grounding problem. If you didn't follow the instructions I gave you in post 4, I suggest you do that. The problems you are having need to be tracked down by doing proper testing using a meter or light probe.

The cel was for the speedo, but it works fine until I turn the stalk to the on position for the headlights. and the abs light only comes on in reverse. Which also shuts the headlights off. They come right back on, and the abs light goes off when I take it out of reverse. The speedo also stops working when the headlights are in the on position, when i turn it back(even while driving) it pops right back up to the speed I am going. I'll check the grounds again... I have a multimeter, any specific areas i should check first?

Lets check out the grounding for the headlights first. We first need to make sure that you are referencing to a good ground point before we start taking measurments. One way to do that is to check for voltage drops between various ground points. With the engine running and the headlights on, start checking ground connections between the negative battery post and the negative battery clamp. Set the meter to read DC voltage and see if there is any voltage between those points. Since they should be tied together with no resistance between them there should be no voltage difference. If you have no voltage there then move the probe on the battery post to the chassis ground. Make sure there isn't any voltage there either. Keep one probe on negative battery lead and then check the engine ground the same way. You keep moving around from known good test points. The ground problem may be in the dash area so you may need to make a ground lead extension to work from the nagative lead of the battery so you can measure points inside the car. You can also make other ground points your reference point as long as you know they are good compared to the battery ground connection.

I am assuming you have a digital meter to make the checks with so you don't need to keep track of polarity on the meter probes.
