Default Dell CEO poised to join auto industry

Quote:
Despite a slumping U.S. auto market, Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Inc., thinks that there are plenty of opportunities within the auto industry, and not where you might think. Although it’s perfectly rational to assume the 43 year old CEO has his eye on incorporating Dell computers into future vehicles, Dell is actually planning to invest in auto dealerships.

Dell admits that he has discussed joint ventures with unnamed automakers, but his first foray into the industry will likely be through dealerships, particularly high-end luxury and import dealerships.

Because of the slumping market, Dell thinks this is the perfect time to get his foot in the door. “When people are panicking and don’t really know what to do, that’s probably the period of greatest opportunity from an investor’s standpoint to make changes and do good things,” Dell told the Detroit Economic Club. “Now you have to have receptivity to change, and you have to embrace change, but what other choice do you have?”

According to Automotive News, Dell’s new joint venture with former Sonic Automotive President Jeffrey Rachor — dubbed MSD Automotive Partners LLC — will invest as much as $500 million in high-end luxury and import dealerships.

At a recent meeting of the Detroit Economic Club (no jokes, please), Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Computer, made an hour-long power speech about the opportunity present in changing markets like the one automakers now find themselves in. Saying "I think there is opportunity all up and down the spectrum," Dell was stating what business-folks have known for a long time: that chaos is just another word for profit. Now, Michael, have any good ideas on how to amortize the cost on a billion-dollar investment in now-idled truck plants? [DetNews

I wonder if this has anything to do with certain Italian brands that are poised to re-enter the US market? Hmmm....

I guess when you have a zillion dollars, you are get into any industry... you have the resources to wade out any lulls in the industry.

Strange though that he would get into this industry of all things.

Mr. Michael Dell lives here in the Austin area and owns a Ford GT. I have a buddy who owns a GT here and knows Dell. Apparently he's kind of a car enthusiast. I wouldn't be surprised to see him investing into Ford.

Yep, you think you're doing well - then you see guys like this... I keep seeing the cover of San Fran magazine in the supermarket - it has a 26 year-old San Jose HS dropout on the cover - he's sold 2 tech startups so far and is worth 100 million... I'm such a loser.

Nah. You're not a loser. Life's just not fair.

People start tech companies all the time... He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

I bet his plan is to copy the model he used at Dell Computers except with cars. Direct to the consumer, customized to specs. It could revolutionize the way you buy a car.

^^ He's not building the cars, he's getting into the dealer side of things, so I don't see how he can use the "have it your way" DELL computer model at all.
