Default 07 STI cylinder 2 failed. Need help planning rebuild.

Hey y'all,

Brought my STI to the shop yesterday- cylinder 2 is dead. Tearing down the motor tomorrow to assess the damage. My guess, ringland failure.

Cylinder 2 pressure was 40, compared to others 120ish.

I'm having the motor rebuilt, possibly cylinder overbore depending on the damage- Then installing Wiseco forged pistons.

I plan on installing supporting mods in preparation for next summer's turbo swap (20g).

So far, here's the list of mods (including what's on the car already)
Maddad 3" HF Cat TBE
APS 70mm CAI
APS 70mm inlet
APS topmount
JDM TGV Deletes
DW 750cc injectors
Walbro fuel pump
Phenolic Spacer
P&P turbo
Accessport 2.0 (will retune 91/100)

Am I missing anything?

Thanks for your help!

No warranty? Only running stage 2 (assuming em and exhaust) doesn't this seem a little odd? I guess it really doesn't matter since you are planning a build but still...

I wouldn't recommend the 20G. you won't be happy with it and you will want more. IF your already going to be doing internal work, build it for a GT35R. Do some Axis heads or Cosworth and that GT35R will spool a good 800 rpm sooner. Imagine GT35R power that hits full spool at 3700 rpm!!!

If you stay Bolt on, then Blouch Dom III should be your option. Spool is quick and makes good top end. (the dom III is what I have and love it.) I would highly consider doing a GT35R though if you are already going to be doing internals. Get ready to Crap yourself when it is done because it will hit like a Sledge hammer.

Since you were running stock injectors before going with 750cc the failure was probably due to an injector failure with #2. The 07's are notorious for cracking ringlands even with the stock tune. With your car the 91 map runs high duty cycles which is where those injectors fail. Your tune was safe, but it's only a matter of time for most 07's.

The car had 1500 miles on it before it was modified or tuned. First tunes (91 and 95 octane) included TBE and snorkus delete (gp moto elbow)

Initially Dan at Harman Motive tuned the car- as soon as the accessport was available for the '07s. When Jon (HB Speed) moved to Ca, he tuned the car again. The car drove great for 20,000 miles with these mods. Ran very stong! Decent gas mileage, and little oil consumption. No CELs.

The problem occurred after I installed the APS intercooler. It was installed without a tune and driven for ~1000 miles. Driven conservatively mind you...

I threw a CEL (P0302- cylinder 2 misfire) and took it to the local subaru dealership. They wouldn't even look into the problem b/c of the aftermarket stuff (tbe, i/c). They claimed that my turbo is aftermarket (vf-43). Never will my car go back to them. Worthless.

After reading what people have been experiencing with dealerships and warranty issues, I figured that I don't want the same inferior parts to go into the motor.

Hopefully new injectors and forged pistons will fix the problem. I need this motor to last.

^^^^^ I'm in the same boat as you. I have the 07 WRX and I cracked the ringland on my cylinder 2 piston. Subaru wanted 600 dollars to tear the motor down after the compression test. I said well why didnt you do a leakdown test and they tried to go on and on with some bs so I took my keys and left. Dont mean to thread jack but I plan on building to but I only want about 350whp I'm tryin to decide if just forged pistons is gonna be enough or if I should get more( thinking cometic hg and arp headstuds but idk). If you find a good price on some pistons man let me know lol. I think I'm gonna fix the car completely and take it to Subaru and be like I just sprayed all around the motor with WD-40 and it started working again

Thanks for filling me in......I have an 07sti as well with a protuned stage 2 map (clark turner tuned). I guess that APS TMIC really did your engine in. I remember when i added a perrin TMIC on my old bugeye, my egts skyrocketed past 900C untuned. Im sure it threw off all my afrs...

Im thinking of buying a wideband...perhaps you could benifit from one as well?
