ARGH!!!!

Let me first say that --- hey WT F? we get like 10" of snow in denver this WHOLE winter (summer?) and the DAY I leave some areas of town got more than 12".... sheesh

Anyway, In kentucky on a contract job - and will be for prolly 2-3 weeks. So I'm crusin to the store to pick up some batteries for my MP3 player, I get to the walgreens, and a COP pulls in behind me and throws on the lights, chirps the siren. I stay in the car, roll down my window, turn on the lights, do all the right things.... he comes up to me...

(witht he most hick accent you can render)

"Son, was there a reason for that exceedingly quick start from the light back there?"

Thinking to myself "What quick start?" I said "No Sir, I was just checking for burning oil from my exhaust, as the car is behaving awekwardly from being at such a different altitude"

Hick_cop_01 replies: "Uh huh... License, registration, and proof of insurance sir"

Innocent_WRX_owner says: Yes sir, here they are.

[10 minutes pass while hick_cop_01 runs plates, blah blah - Cop enters stage right to innocent_WRX_owner's window]

"Mr <name deleted> In the future when you need to perform a system check please do it in a long driveway, or private property, not on MY street"

This equated to "well I pulled you over for no reason because you had colorado plates, and your exhaust was a bit louder than all the mercedes/lexus's around me"

total BS - was crap. I didn't dump the clutch or rev the engine, i let the clutch out just like any stop light and accelerated to 41mph with the gas floored, shifted and coasted. Speed limit being 45 I wasn't speeding or anything. Can someone tell me.. is ACCELERATING quickly illegal if you don't break any other laws? He might be able to get exhibition of speed but I'd think he needed to catch me revving, or spinning the tires??

Was complete crap. Gimp_Cop_01 can eat my shorts!

You did the right thing... smile, answer his questions politely, address him as 'Sir' or 'Officer'. Whatever it takes to make him happy, and get you on your way with minimal hassle.

I was harrassed by the Colorado Springs police several times when I lived there for "accelerating to quickly" whilst on my motorcycle. Never recieved a ticket or anything. Just a powertrip thing I guess.

Well i was surprised, when i got pulled over i was also given a warning for going to fast off a light, apparently it is a law, i was mad about it too. As long as i don't go over the speed limit, why shouldn't i be able to get up to speed as fast as i want? Bah, that officer really pissed me off!

This is a pretty short term contract, but should net some good pocket change (do I hear enough for my 18" limix lineas anyone??? huh huh? with tires!!) - or maybe the clutch/flywheel, or maybe the A/W intercooler, or maybe... or or or.... :P this is car money undoubtedly, severence is bill money heheh

Yes, car is STUPID fast here in kentucky. I seriously would be completely happy with my car if I lived at this altitude, all the mods I have done haven't appeared to make much of a difference at 6000ft, but damn, here it's WAY WAY faster than it was w/o all the mods.... The sad part is that my car is now prolly the same speed as larry's at 6000 ft <smirk>.... I bet I can take him, if we could race with a 6000 ft difference in altitude :P

I am beginning to wonder what I'm going to do when I move to Texas - Do I really need more mods or will I leave it like it is or maybe switch to a full cobb setup or something, I dunno.

You think your rew is quicker at that altitude? Try a anemic NA EJ25. My car pulls like a freight train at sea level, but here it pulls like a sled dog at best. Only thing I miss about North Carolina really.

BTW you think that cop was a hick... try getting pulled over in Short Pump, Virginia

I am glad that I am not the only one that has had noticable differences in performance after raising in elevation 6000ft. I have a stock WRX, which still pulled hardcore in San Diego. It seems to take forever here for the turbo to spool up. General power overall seems to be way down. Uh... I really need to throw on some mods now. For all of you who have not driven your subies at a "reasonable" altitude, I suggest that you try it out. BIG difference.

Are you guys kidding =)?!? Altitude is the reason I got this car. If you think the WRX sucks when you come up to altitude try out ANY NA car. At least with our car, or mine anyway, I intentionally turn down the boost when I go too sea level and then compensate by turning it back up when I come back to Colorado.

Trust me it works nicely =). Try compensating like that with a NA car or even very easily with a supercharged car.

My 70 Barracuda with a fuelie 383 magnum jumped from a 13.89 at sea level(Tulsa) to a 15.8 yeee haw. Any one timed a WRX low and high? I am curious to see if the difference is less drastic. I'll bet it is but we want numbers baby

I'll take some times while I am here if i can find a non patrolled back road or hit a track. However my Powermeter is showing about 30-50 more WHP than it does in Colorado (listing as about 242-252 right now.... highest # reached in 2nd)

Finally put 2&2 together to figure out how this device is calculating HP - it is definitely wheel. The reason is because you put in a weight of a vehicle, and it has a connection to the speed sensor. So basically If said weight reaches <X> speed in <Y> seconds = Z HP.

I would imagine that the # is pretty accurate assuming the weight of the car is accurate.

Others:

I'll take some 1/4s (I am a CRAPPY driver but it's all relative right?) and 0-60s and then will take some in Denver (with my same crappy driving)

I actually got a TICKET here in Maine for ( and I quote ) "Excessive acceleration noise" when I had my S4 with a Borla ( barely louder than stock ). My car was 4 months old and he still looked for anything he could write me up for...inspection stickers, headlights, etc. I did the same thing you did, but only up to about 25mph. I'm sure it was just because my car was yellow. Luckily he never showed up in court when I contested.

Lucky when you were here in Grand Junction to pick up the Power Meter i-D you didn't run into any of the locals here. I was pulled over for changing lanes too quickly. No tickets, no problems. The cop was younger than I (I am 23) and this is a small town. The police always pull people over for no reason and there is profiling even if it isn't racial. BTW my father worked for the California Highway Patrol so I am pretty confident when I say there are some jerks (very few) that will profile based on what ever pisses them off (and those are the only ones you remember because they are the ones that pull you over for no real reason).

A lot of communities have "speed contest" laws.

For those that might want to know the text of a typical speed contest law, in Colorado state statues it is:

42-4-1105 - Speed contests.
(1) No person shall engage in any motor vehicle speed or acceleration contest or exhibition of speed or acceleration on a highway, and no person shall aid or abet in any such motor vehicle speed or acceleration contest or exhibition on any highway.

(2) No person shall, for the purpose of facilitating or aiding or as an incident to any motor vehicle speed or acceleration contest upon a highway, in any manner obstruct or place any barricade or obstruction or assist or participate in placing any such barricade or obstruction upon any highway.

(3) Any person who violates any provision of this section commits a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense.

Annotation:

Subsection (1) of this section forbids intentional participation in operating motor vehicles competitively to test the swiftness of the vehicles involved. It further prohibits an individual's deliberate drawing of public attention to the vehicle's quality for swiftness. People v. Heckard, 164 Colo. 19, 431 P.2d 1014 (1967).

"Speed" and "acceleration" are related terms. The former refers to the act or state of moving swiftly, while "acceleration" means the act of increasing the speed. People v. Heckard, 164 Colo. 19, 431 P.2d 1014 (1967).

This section is prohibition of aiding or abetting the primary offense and imposes the ordinary common-law accessorial liability. People v. Heckard, 164 Colo. 19, 431 P.2d 1014 (1967).

The language of subsection (2) of this section provides definite warning when that language is measured by common understanding and practice. People v. Heckard, 164 Colo. 19, 431 P.2d 1014 (1967).

You may note that in the state statute it only applies to public highways, so a parking lot would not apply.

The other interesting note is that it needs to be an _intentional_ exhibition of the cars ability to accelerate.

Of course local statutes may be different so you may be charged under a local law rather than the state statute.

Note by the date of the notations that this was used as a catch all to stop drag racing for over 40 years. It is a discressionary call by the cop and is typically used as a "probable cause" reason to encourage a change in driving habits.

I think he was trying to figure out what I was doing, I was driving REALLY slowly, looking at all the weird named streets... had my laptop on for directions, that might have been what REALLY caught his attention. I didn't really care, obeyd all the laws, and he just tailed me close enough to make me nervous, but I knew he had nothing to pull me over on... he was just being an ass.

I was tailed by an officer as soon as I got off i-70 almost TO your place. I think he was trying to figure out what I was doing, I was driving REALLY slowly, looking at all the weird named streets... had my laptop on for directions, that might have been what REALLY caught his attention. I didn't really care, obeyd all the laws, and he just tailed me close enough to make me nervous, but I knew he had nothing to pull me over on... he was just being an ass. -Z
