Default Problems with ej18T

I wanted to turbo my 1.8L, because I was tired of it being so slow. And apparently it didn't really like that. I'm running premium octane gas, and only about 7-8 psi, but now it's developing a bit of a smoking problem at high RPMs. Especially when I downshift, it shoots out a bit of black smoke. But, it quits whenever I return to normal RPMs, or bring it down to idle. It doesn't do it when I start it either. I would suspect that it's my head gasket that's the problem.. But, does anyone know of anything that I could do that wouldn't be crazy out of pocket to make my engine more reliable under boost? Maybe to handle more boost? Oh, I forgot to mention that I haven't had it tuned yet either.. Could that be the major problem??

Well, I just have the stock ECU. I thought I could just get it reflashed.

Do you have a wideband, or larger injectors, RRFPR, SAFC? How many miles are on the block?

I have to quote this one for posterity..... Cause NO ONE ever has reflashed a 1.8 ECU......

And I suspect you have a busted ringland.

I didn't blow it up, I know that much. lol. And I don't really have the money for the swap. That was my plan to begin with. I got the turbo for free. All I bought was an e-gay brand FMIC set w/pipes ($29.99) and custom fit those and everything else. But, anyways then.. What would be the better EM to use? I mean, I guess ANYTHING would be better than stock ECU, but what would be a good direction to go for a cheaper EM that's worth spending money on?

Oh, and the block has ~152,000. I used like 400cc injectors or something. Or it might be less, I'm not sure. I got them used from a buddy of mine.

Seems like you're running way rich on the top end. Black smoke on downshift usually means a rich condition. I'd get the proper monitoring equipment and EM if I wanted to keep that engine alive.

Without EM, 400cc running that amount of boost you're probably just dumping too much gas.

If you're not planning on running more than 7-8 psi you might be able to get away with a fuel piggyback controller (like S-AFC)

as ej18s mentioned, you are probably just dumping excess fuel... i applaud your tactics, and bravery (or is is stupidity? i kid i kid) running a turbo on a stock 1.8l with 152k... thats just crazy... the easiest way to figure it out is to tell us what color smoke it is....
blue = oil => rings
white = coolant => head gasket
black = fuel => fuel management needed
