Default Cold weather noise

I recently purched my first Subaru, a new Impreza Outback Sport. In trying to get used to the sound of the boxer four, I find it to be a combination of a smooth engine with a somewhat rough sound, particularly when it is cold. In fact, when it is fully warm it is quite quiet. But when it is real cold out, the engine rattles more than most other fours. Is this normal for the boxers or something to be concerned about?

Congrats on the purchase of your first Subie!

Our boxer engines are a little noisier compared to some other fours when cold. A little noisiness that goes away after a few minutes of warming up is probably normal. However, there have been some people with faulty belt tensioners that cause an abnormal amount of cold startup noise. If you are concerned, bring it in to the dealer and let them take a look at it.
