Default Lutz speaks out on manual transmissions, says ‘09 G8 GT is getting Tremec six-speed

Quote:
According to today’s reports, GM’s Bob Lutz said the 2009 Pontiac G8 GT will have an optional six-speed manual transmission made by Tremec. Previously, enthusiasts were told they’d have to wait for the 400hp G8 GXP before they could get six cogs and three pedals.

The 361-horsepower G8 GT is currently only offered with a six-speed automatic, which many criticize for its slow shifts. The news comes from an interview Cardomain held with Lutz, the Vice Chairman of Global Product Development at GM, during which he also revealed manual transmissions hurt the overall fleet fuel economy, as modern automatics are more fuel efficient than their earlier counterparts and even beat out manuals.

While that’s a somewhat questionable claim, seeing how GM’s Cobalt gets 2 more miles to the gallon on both city and highway cycles in stick-shift trim than automatic, it may be true in higher-end offerings, though those are hardly offered with manuals nowadays, so comparisons are not possible.

And that’s not counting the fact that enthusiasts prefer manual transmissions over slushboxes as they allow more driver involvement, better control of the vehicle and a lower price point as the icing on the cake.

Lutz also mentioned the upcoming Camaro will be offered with the same Tremec six-speed manual, but didn’t specify when or if it will be bolted to all available engines.

It's easy to say that modern automatics are more fuel efficient when you gear them tall as hell and intentionally short-gear your manuals.

i think the gt with a six speed is a way better deal than the gxp. i dont think the extra 40 hp is worth the premium.

Could you tune the extra 40 hp back into the motor?

This is great news... So, the AFM issue that was rumored to be a problem (GM source) was a bunch of crap or did they have time to figure it out? I'm too lazy to check.... how good is the Tremec six speed?

Tremecs are decent. They were fitted to the rwd Ford Cosworths. 5 speed version.

We had one in the shop I work at. The baseline was 331whp and 338ft lbs. After the tuning it made 368 and 386 to the wheels. (This is on a Dyno Jet in Las Vegas weather.)

I bet you'll get AWD and DI on the wagon but it will be a slushbox, good slushbox though. Only 1 in maybe a 1,000 would buy a manual in a CTS wagon. I don't think you can even get AWD and a manual in the sedan, think it has to be paired with the auto.
