Default Dash swap or Not? Need Opinions!

Hey guys I've been killing myself trying to make a decision here. I ordered my 05 WRX motor and dash that will be going into my 01 RS very soon. This is going to be my daily driver. I'm trying to figure out if I want to do the dash swap or not. I can still back out on the dash and just get the motor.

Option 1: Spend $500 on the dash, have a much easier time with wiring, fabricate the dash beam and everything, have a much newer, nicer looking dash, but (heres the big one) have no airbags.

Option 2: Spend ~$1000, send the wiring out to ECS, keep the old rs dash, but keep the airbags.

For the moment, I'm all for the new WRX dash, I love the look and everything, and I'm down to do the wiring since its a little easier than splicing everything behind the RS dash, it should be a good learning experience. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is not having airbags.

I know most will say airbags without a doubt, but the truth is, my parents drove around without seatbelts, let alone airbags for part of their lives. I also honestly don't know anyone that has had them deploy.

I need some help with the decision! Please let me know your opinions and don't hold back!

(P.S. I've been looking all over but can't find any info, if anyone knows of a way to get the airbags working in an 05 dash swap, please point me in the direction!)

i think in some states if you remove the airbags you will not be able to get an inspection sticker, but then again i havent really had anyone look for them. Also, IF you do get into an accident, and your bags dont deploy anyone in your car gets hurt your insurance will probably not cover them, because you altered the vehicles safety features.

You can get the airbags from a wrx, its probably around an extra grand, plus you will have your new dash. Im going to be doing an 03 wrx swap in my gc very shortly, i am having ecs do the wiring, only because this is my only vehicle and i need the car to be done in a short time, my fathers diesel which i will be borrowing gets HORRIBLE mileage. So im kinda in a rush.

yep thats where i'm purchasing my motor from. From reading though, I was under the impression that its not at all a direct swap. Everyone i found with the dash swap didn't bother with the bags because it would have been too hard.

I'd like some more info too. I"m doing a second gen dashboard swap in my OBS. 05 Legacy harness though so I might need Legacy airbags. Oh and Rob that new dash and motor will go nicely with that slick chasis and DIY headlights.

I just swapped without changing the dash. I don't know how it would be any easier changing out the dash. I didn't even touch most of the wires not engine/tranny related.

Definately don't go without airbags.

-Swapped 02 wrx into 02 ts. Any general swap questions, feel free to pm me about.

Exactly, from what I understand, theres a whole new junction under the dash that will need to be spliced in (SMJ). I'm going from an 01 (GC body style) to an 05 (GD)

^there is, alot of splicing involved, i have a wiring diagram from an 03 in front of me along with my 00, and i would think about 1 week of screwing around with the wiring before i had it done, and im confortable with doing it to. I just need it done faster.
