Post i need a tachometer

Yeah my base model Impreza came with no tachometer. My mom's minivan has a tachometer but my car doesn't. All I have is a display that says Subaru...so I know how Subaru I'm going. So where can I get one? How much would it cost? I don't want a fancy tach, just the one that should've come with the car. A genuine Subaru tach. It's not a necessity but I think a manual car should have one. It would've helped me learn when to shift when I first started driving the car.

a genuine subaru tach?
come on now. dont go that route.
if you really care to see the RPMs, then get a autometer tach. with a shiftlight. the highest RPM display is 8,000. im sure thats more than enough. it seems like your not too much into racing so it might not be your best bet.

thats very odd i would assume that every manual automobile would come with a tach thats weird. find a subaru parts catalogue or go to your dealer and they should be able to help you get a stock tach.
peace

It's hard to be into racing when you got a stock FWD Impreza. But what do you think the costs would be for the tach and installation? And where can I find an autometer tach?

I too had the same problem. No tach. I know the Brighton models don't come with them. Mine didn't. So what i did was i went on e-bay and found a guy who was selling an entire instrument cluster from a 92 legacy, and got that. Shipped and everyhting it cost me less than $35. Then i had to do a little trimming of the old tach to get it to fit into the spot where it should be on mine and i had to run a couple of wires because the screw holes are the same but all i had ot do was solder three wires on and fit it in and it looks almost stock. Except for the needle being a different color and style.

Hmmm...sounds easy enough, except for the soldering part. I think I remember looking on ebay about a month ago, didn't find anything really. That's probably the cheapest way to go though.

if i were you i would just get an aftermarket tach just because it would be easier to find and probably easier to install. unless you are trying to make your car look stock. but if you want an autometer tach get the cheipest one the autometer sport comp silver tachometers you can get the tach with a redline pointer for 128.95 or get the tach with a shift lite for 185.95. these prices are from summit.
hope that helps
peace

WillReckXhop - thanks a lot, that's the answer I was looking for. How much, from where and how easy to install.

iBlueVirus - I've heard it's rare to find a FWD model Impreza and guess what...lucky me, I found one. I don't really need the AWD in Tampa though. Plus my car is lighter than any AWD Impreza which helps out the MPG.

Subaru didn't go to 100% all wheel drive vehicles until 1996.

The move to a full all wheel drive line is waht saved Subaru.

Also, lot's of manuals don't have a tach, the Honda Civic DX for example.

Hey Doink I just swapped my 1997 non-tach brighton cluster with 120mph speedo to a pre-1995 Impreza cluster with 140mph speedo and tach from the local Rancho Cordova Recycler for @$100. They have a website and a phone number. Also I have a 5" Autometer Sportcomp Tach that is brand new for $90+shipping if you want it. PM me for details.

I have a tach out of a late model Legacy that I will ship in the states for $35.00 it has a white pointer but will need a little trimming to fit the Imprezza instrument cluster.
