Default rear speaker question

Everywhere i've read, it states the rear speakers on a 97 legacy sedan are 6.5 inch speakers. i bought a pair the other week and they're just a bit too big to fit the opening. should i get 5 1/4?

^^ Kansei - take rear seat (bottom cushion) out. Swing back cushion up and out.

Speakers are 5.25".

damnit.. everywhere i looked it said 6.5.... ugh.. ok awesome thanks.. i guess i gotta go find a new set of speakers then

and yes, you pull to two bolts holding the bottom bench in, pull that out, then three bolts along the metal rail under the seatback. then lift the seatback up a bit and pull it toward the front of the car to get it completely out. then just pull the rear deck out and you're set. its annoying, but not difficult.

I have 6.5" speakers back there on my car. I didn't install them - gave them to a shop to do after I had them for ~2 years and never found time to do it - but they didn't say they had any problems putting them in or had to modify anything.

Ok. So i bought 6.5" and they were too big. Then i got 5.25" and they were too small.... can anyone definitively tell me what size i should be looking at? or am i doing something wrong?

6.5" with adapters. My Infinity Kappa coaxials (that everyone in the Audio forum made fun of me for! ) came with adaptors. After rummaging through my screw bin I found what I needed. They fit and sound !

what kind of adapters exactly? the 6.5" i bought sat about 1/4 inch above the opening because the speaker was too wide to fit all the way into the opening

I just used 5.25" and redrilled the holes, they fit just fine. Alpine Type S coaxials.

They were a cheap stamped steel adapter that allowed the holes to line up. The 6.5" speaker's outer lip does not fit INTO the hole, it overlaps just enough to secure it with screws. I'm sure you know that but I ust wanted to clarify because I wasn't too clear in my post above.

The speaker sits up above the factory sheet metal a bit, yeah. Once you put the rear deck back on, you can't tell. And my tweets stick out just a bit from the peak of the surrounds too, so they are technically the highest point.

I also have 6.5. I think you just need to be concerned about certain 6.5 speakers, if the magnet is too big or the speaker is too deep.
